Jami Attenberg's 1000 Words is a new favourite on my #writing shelf. I've enjoyed it all year and now can look forward to rereading, as needed. Something for every mood. Great guest contributors too.

"What does it mean to show up for someone else on the page, or in person, creatively, professionally? When we exchange services with each other, weโ€™re cultivating community. And sometimes we must do it without expecting anything in return. "

Feels weird to news here, but we just released a demo for the game I've been working on for 6.5 years, so news I must:

Essays sometimes carry the blind spots of an academic white male, though the questions he raises, especially around experience, obsessions, and war are worthy of cultural spotlight. See his magazine n+1 for more timely thinking.

Some thoughts about living with mental illness and a few books that, in my experience, address the matter well

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, at least in Canada and the US, and this morning I awoke to find an essay in my inbox titled โ€œThe Last Great Stigmaโ€ by Pernille Yilmam. This Aeon article addreโ€ฆ

I've been dipping in and out of this book all year, absolutely loving its tone and substance. It's been company when I'm feeling alone with the words.

This morning I read Bryan Washington's contribution, about how we think about what's worth taking up space on the page.

It's one of my favourite books on #writing even though it's a recent addition to my shelves.

I just voted for the Tournament of Books Camp ToB 2024 selections: did you?

Their discussions, whether the annual or summer ("Itโ€™s less literary bloodshed, more bookish sunburn.") variety, are delightfully #bookish. And the novels for this year look fab.

Bonnie Jo Campbell's book arrived in my library stack after a long wait. Her voice is stunning, I lose track of time.

"This morning the island was alive with flowery and mlody fragrances, alive with the urgent trills and chips of birdsong, while more quietly, down low, sounds of scurrying and munching."

I particularly like the 'chips' of birdsong, which could even be mistaken as a typo, but it's quite a different sound, and that kind of unusual detail makes the passage sing.
