The BSR is an interdisciplinary research institute in Rome for the arts, humanities and social sciences

At the BSR, award-holders go on group trips together—and they’re such a special part of the experience! ✨

They’re the perfect opportunity to spend time together while visiting places that can be a bit tricky to reach on your own. The BSR supports with organisation, making everything smooth and enriching.

Last week, we visited Tarquinia, where we explored the incredible painted necropolises and then headed into town to see the museum.

What a wonderful experience! 💛

On 25 March at 18:00, Abigail Brundin, Director of the British School at Rome, will take part in the talk “Rome in the World’s Imagination” at the MAXXI Museum (Sala Carlo Scarpa).

The conversation will explore how Rome continues to shape the global imagination — including the contemporary perspectives developed by the international academies and cultural institutes based in the city.

🎟 Free entry, subject to availability.

Next Saturday, 21 March at 10:30am, Stephen Kay (BSR Archaeology Manager), Sara Fabbri (BSR Archaeology Survey Technician) and Elena Pomar (BSR Geophysics Researcher) will take part in the annual Furfo Project public conference in Barisciano (L’Aquila).

A new volume co-edited by Davide Massimo is out now: City of Foreigners. Archaeological and Epigraphic Perspectives on Ancient Rome (Quasar).

The book grew out of a round table at the BSR and explores how archaeological and epigraphic evidence can help us understand the presence and experiences of foreigners in ancient Rome.
The volume builds on Davide’s research as a Rome Awardee at the BSR and the round table “Foreigners in Ancient Rome: Epigraphic Perspectives,” co-organised in January 2023.

🔍 Unseen Stories in the Soil
Angela Trentacoste and her team are once again leading the environmental program—collecting tiny but vital traces of ancient life. From carbonized seeds and charcoal to animal bones and even a dormouse tooth, these small finds offer big insights into past foodways and environments.
🧱 Exploring Early Falerii Novi
This season, we've moved about 100 meters north of last year’s excavation area, still along the ancient Via Amerina but now closer to the northern gate of Falerii Novi. What’s emerging? A monumental structure built with opus quadratum blocks of local tuff—likely dating to the Republican period.

Have you seen the tote bags from the British School at Rome? ☀️🌞

The spring season has inspired us to create these 100% organic tote bags that are a must-have for anyone who spends their days engaging in culture!

You can find them at the BSR, ask at the front desk!
