American astronomer Annie Jump Cannon died #OTD in 1941.

Cannon developed a system of stellar classification based on spectral characteristics, which became known as the Harvard Classification Scheme (she was one of the "Harvard Computers"). She classified hundreds of thousands of stars, organizing them by temperature and spectral characteristics. Her work laid the foundation for our understanding of stellar evolution and the composition of stars.

Niels Bohr publishes the first paper of the trilogy "On the constitution of atoms and molecules" in The London, Edinburgh, and Dublin Philosophical Magazine and Journal of Science. This trilogy provides a comprehensive review of the origin and content of Bohr's atomic history. In a longer perspective, Bohr's quantum atom of 1913 gave rise to the later Heisenberg-Schrödinger quantum mechanics and all its relevant consequences.

#OTD in 1845. "The Raven" is published in The Evening Mirror in New York, the 1st publication with the name of the author, Edgar Allan Poe.

Its publication made Poe popular in his lifetime, although it did not bring him much financial success. The poem was soon reprinted, parodied, & illustrated. Critical opinion is divided as to the poem's literary status, but it nevertheless remains one of the most famous poems ever written.
