@brnrd the general approach is to use what's there instead of reinventing. I have never heard of self-built solutions in that area.
From what I understand of the article, I do suspect that this problem will not affect government instances as the server is trusted and access is handled with OAuth2 against an employee directory. There are no public users involved. This should still be addressed of course.

KDE on FreeBSD has a working Update app (uses native pkg it seems).
