Looks like there are some pretty big new features in the first Mastodon 4.0 release candidate: https://github.com/mastodon/mastodon/releases/tag/v4.0.0rc1

A few that caught my eye (there's loads more):

- ability to follow hashtags
- ability to translate posts
- support for uploading WebP/AVIF/HEIC
- change post editing to be enabled in web UI
- no more /web prefix on web app paths

@rnadworny Welcome! ๐ŸŽ‰

"...after getting the hang of it, I love Mastodon like I did Twitter a decade ago."

After using Mastodon for a week, I completely agree with this author, @maxeddy.

Here's his excellent (long!) explainer for those seeking to migrate.

@shaytotten Hi there!! ๐Ÿ‘‹๐Ÿผ

p.s. By the way, a lot of the servers on https://joinmastodon.org/servers say "get on waitlist" but this phrasing is misleading.

A lot of these servers don't have a waitlist at all and will accept you pretty quickly, within a few hours in some cases. It's just the server admin is screening out spammers by switching on the "why do you want to join?" form, because spambots find this form harder to cope with.

Currently running my federate.social instance under the $8 month threshold (incl. domain reg.) It's been so fun and really improves your experience. It only takes a few clicks to get it running after you secure a domain. The more folks setup these small instances, the more it takes the load off of the big servers. They really act as landing pads for folks to get oriented but best to jump to a new instance when you're ready. https://masto.host/pricing/
