I'm just a guy from North Carolina, transplanted to New York City. Blind, autistic, going deaf. Amateur radio operator, audio editor/sound engineer (as hearing dictates,) pretend to be a musician sometimes.
My old Ubiquiti 802.11AC access points need to be replaced, so I got two U6 Pros. Nobody seems to have more than 1 in stock, so ordered from two different sellers. #FirstWorldProblems

Welcome new users! A lot of you might have an empty Home screen right now and that's probably because you're on mobile and using the official apps.

Please switch to a 3rd party app like Metatext on iOS and Tusky on Android to see all of the active channels.

Here's a good post about the timelines: https://mindly.social/@KuJoe/109331216797364511

Welcome new people to the Fediverse! The number one question I see as a first post here is "where is everybody?" Home timeline: People you follow Local timeline: People on the same server as you Federated timeline: People your server knows about (Local + other servers) If you are new, your home timeline will be empty. There is no algorithm so you decide what shows up there. Good luck building your own social network experience! It can be as busy or relaxed as you want it to be.

I have encountered more image descriptions on Mastodon in 24 hours than I have in Twitter in a couple of years. Seriously. I'm not exaggerating.
As a blind person, this means a lot to me. If you read this and you describe your images, thank you so, so, so much on behalf of all of us. If you don't, now you know you'll be helping random Internet strangers make sense of your posts by typing in a few more words than usual.
I just made a small change to my parrot script for Allstar node 55553, which should result in better stats reporting for signals with a loud squelch tail. The stats generator now won't hear the tail, which would confuse the average if it is significantly louder than other recorded audio, but it will still be played back. Basically, I've trimmed the last 300ms of audio being fed into SoX for stats, but the full file is played back through the parrot.

If you wanna be my clerical collar, you gotta overheat with my doorknobs
Here's a couple of commercials for a company called D&R Computer Services in Dobson, NC, using a DECtalk speech synthesizer. This was recorded sometime in the automn of 1997, exact date unknown, from WBRF 98.1 FM in Galax, VA.

After all the newcomers It's like my timeline is like:

TRILLIAN:(V.O.)
Five to one against and falling. Four to one against and falling… Three to one… two… one. Probability factor of one to one. We have normality. I repeat: we have normality. Anything you still can’t cope with is therefore your own problem.

Life is short. Write that novel. Paint that painting. Try new recipes. Learn black magic. Go into the forest at night. Summon a demon. Earn that demon's trust. Become best friends with it. Brag to everyone else about your new cool demon best friend. Knit that sweater.

Things I've learned about Mastodon this week:

1. Photo captions are read by screenreaders for people who have impaired vision. The more descriptive you make them, the more people can appreciate your post.

2. Hashtags should be "camel style" which means you capitalize each word in the tag - this enables screen readers to identify different words in the tag,

3. Reblogging boosts posts and favourites do not.

4. Hashtags are way more important here than on the birdsite.
