An avid reader of a variety of genres, both fiction and non-fiction, who writes short reviews of read books.
The reader for the Blood Meridian audiobook is choice. Spot on.
Yesterday would have been my Granny’s 78th birthday. She died during Covid (unrelated) so we didn’t get to have a funeral. I felt more somber than I expected to. I guess it’s kind of weird being reminded of something where you never got a chance to properly grieve.
In one of those stages where I keep wanting to start new books. I’m even really enjoying the booksI’m currently reading I just want to read everything atm I guess.
Finally platinumed Ghost of Tsushima, the most beautiful game I’ve ever played. Working through Disco Elysium and scouring the PS Plus catalog for something good.
I love Jane Austin. A bunch of rich people making a big to-do out of nothing and ruining their lives over it? Hilarious. 5 stars.
Attended my first book club tonight at the local bookstore. It was for “The Dud Avocado” which I read earlier this year and really enjoyed. I was the only male there, maybe due to book choice but more likely speaking to local culture. I really enjoyed it. It was nice to talk about a book with someone, actually have an in depth discussion. It’s been a while…
About 50 pages from finishing #JonFosse ’s #Septology . Beautiful book, written in the same vein as Molly Bloom’s chapter in Ulysses, or Ducks, Newberryport but without the repetitive phrase. I’d never read Fosse prior to this but I’ll definitely keep an eye out for more from him.
Looks like the 500 character count will not be enough for my normal reviews. Looking into solutions.
Reggie Woods on Instagram: "“New Confessions of an Economic Hitman” by John Perkins (2016) Non-Fiction: Memoir/Globalization In the early 50s Kermit Roosevelt Jr. orchestrated a coup in Iran and through economic models encouraged the taking on of debt to build up infrastructure leading to future economic prosperity; the real goal was to use the debt to put Iran in the USAs pocket. His tactics would be emulated by private corporations through euphemistically named Economic Hitmen like John Perkins for the next several decades. Perkins recounts his career as an “EHM” and the countries he helped to devastate to boost corporate interests. Perkins knows he sold his soul for a glamorous life and spend the second part of the book detailing his regret and wishes to make amends. The new edition brings us into modern times and explains how the tactics of EHMs are more prevalent than ever and how they’ve spread from victimizing 3rd world governments to US citizens (using Student loan debt as an example). It’s a scathing critique of globalization, and an insightful economic/geopolitical history of the last 70 years from an insider. He tells his tale wonderfully, but with a lot of bravado, and he does get a little preachy when proselytizing on how we can change the system, coming from someone who is still profiting off of it. It feels like a true postmodernist history where the shadowy consulting firms are making more of an impact than your vote ever has or will. #books #bookreview #bookreviews #bookstagram #bookish #booknerd #bookworm #confessionsofaneconomichitman #newconfessionsofaneconomichitman #johnperkins #nonfiction #nonfictionbooks"
