From 1919 to 1933 the Institute of Sexology was a private institute in Berlin-Tiergarten which was founded by Magnus Hirschfeld to promote scientific research on sexuality and gender. It was the world's first institute of its kind. In practice, it was also a point of contact for people in need and a counselling centre. It was permanently closed and ransacked within months of the Nazis taking power in Germany in May 1933. The books were removed and burned.
