Foundation models’ acceptable use policies disregard the environment and nature | Nature Machine Intelligence

It has been 6 months since I passed my viva, yet I forgot to share my thesis here   (due to it feeling unreal af... until... today :)

It's called 'The Image at the End of the World: Communities of practice redefining technology on a damaged Earth'. In it I describe communities which give voice and shape to different definitions and roles for technology within the polycrisis: permacomputing, computing within limits, collapse informatics, salvage computing, slow tech, redundant technology, low-tech, feminist technology, convivial computing, disability driven development and more.

Are rare species more common than common species? 🔎

A study by Callaghan et al., downloaded all GBIF-mediated occurrence records between 1880 - end of 2020 🤯to analyze global abundance distributions for 39 classes of eukaryotes. 🐝

It was found that improved sampling and greater data availability over time unveiled the true shape of species distributions. This was most clearly evident in birds.🦆

”Our analysis of a selection of questionable GPT-fabricated scientific papers found in Google Scholar shows that many are about applied, often controversial topics susceptible to disinformation: the environment, health, and computing. The resulting enhanced potential for malicious manipulation of society’s evidence base, particularly in politically divisive domains, is a growing concern.”

GPT-fabricated scientific papers on Google Scholar: Key features, spread, and implications for preempting evidence manipulation | HKS Misinformation Review

Academic journals, archives, and repositories are seeing an increasing number of questionable research papers clearly produced using generative AI. They are often created with widely available, general-purpose AI applications, most likely ChatGPT, and mimic scientific writing. Google Scholar easily locates and lists these questionable papers alongside reputable, quality-controlled research. Our analysis of a selection of

One of the most powerful and successful metaphors in recent history must be the use of “the cloud” to refer to (yet obfuscate) energy intensive data storage and processing that occurs in very real places right here on Earth.
