BIO² is a four-year Horizon Europe project dedicated to improving organic farming by replacing contentious agricultural inputs with safe, effective, and circular alternatives.

While organic farming limits synthetic chemicals, many currently allowed substances — such as copper and sulfur-based fungicides, antiparasitic drugs, and manure-derived fertilizers — raise concerns for environmental, animal, and human health. BIO² aims to offer science-based, sustainable solutions for organic farming.

We’re kicking off 2026 by introducing our partner Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR)! 🇮🇹
BIO² is coordinated by Dr. Alessio Adamiano at CNR–ISSMC, with Michele Iafisco, Monica Montesi & Silvia Panseri. Their expertise in materials science, biochemistry & circular phosphorus powers BIO²’s natural solutions for organic farming.

TThe #BIO2project was featured at the European Researchers’ Night – Life is Science in #Graz.

Our poster showed how bio-based solutions from circular sources can replace contentious inputs in organic farming – sparking conversations on sustainability and innovation.

Although busy organizing the event, I (Katharina Schwaiger) enjoyed sharing BIO² with visitors – showing how research connects to global challenges.

The BIO² Project Launches to Make Organic Farming Safer, Smarter, and More
Sustainable!

BIO² is a four-year Horizon Europe project that develops natural, bio-based alternatives - tested under real farming conditions.
The project brings together researchers, farmers, companies, and circular economy
innovators to build a future-ready organic sector — one that protects crops, animals, and the
planet alike.
