2023 TB Testing Services Training Application

Overview
The Berkeley Free Clinic (BFC) is a volunteer owned/run medical collective. We formed in 1969 from a group of street medics that cared for protesters injured by UC Berkeley police and national guard during the People’s Park Riots. Since then, we’ve been providing free medical, dental, and peer counseling services.
We believe that healthcare is a fundamental human right, that power and knowledge should be shared collectively, and that everyone has the right to basic knowledge about their bodies.
Unlike most clinics, most of us are non-professionals – medical services are provided by ordinary people whom we train to provide specific medical/social services. All of us are volunteers and we share decision making power equally.
Tuberculosis (TB) testing is the BFC’s most requested service. The BFC Tuberculosis Testing Services (TTS) helps to meet those requests by providing TB (PPD) skin tests, setting up free blood (Quantiferon) tests, and helping to navigate clients through follow up care after a positive result. We currently offer testing administration on Mondays with in-person results given on Wednesdays.
Who we are looking for:
We approach healthcare from the perspective of mutual aid - we are providing support to our fellow community members as an act of solidarity, not “saving” or “helping” people. We reject the idea that we are “better” in any way than the people who receive our services and do not approach our work as charity.
You must be 18 or turning 18 by February 4th to apply. We prioritize applicants who come from the communities we serve. Queer and trans folks, poor folks, people of color, chronically ill, neurodivergent, and disabled people, people who use drugs, sex workers, and HIV-positive folks are welcomed and encouraged to apply. We believe in actively cultivating an intergenerational community and encourage older folks to apply as well.
APPLICATION PROCESS
The deadline for the application is Sunday January 8th 2023 at 11:59pm. If you need an extension due to unforeseen circumstances, please send an email to [email protected] and we will try our best to accommodate a 1-2 day extension.
We’ll let you know if we wanna interview you by Sunday January 22nd. Interviews will take place throughout the week of January 23rd.
You will be notified of an acceptance by Wednesday February 1st.
If accepted, you’ll need to: Complete our data security training, have been tested for TB in the past 12 months, and provide vaccination records for TDaP, MMR, varicella, hepatitis B, and COVID (including a booster). If you need help with this, we can provide TB testing and vaccines for TDaP and Hep B.
TRAINING PROCESS
Training will occur from February 4th through March 26th 2023 and will be conducted through an online and in-person hybrid model. The online portion of the training will consist of self-paced weekly homework assignments. Although there are no strict due dates for the assignments, suggested due dates will be included to help you stay on track.
The in-person training will complement the online learning with client care focused scenarios and skill building. On-shift training extends beyond the initial training period. Training will end once all requirements are met, and if both you and your observing medics feel that you are ready. Below is a snapshot of what training will look like:
In-person training will take place on Saturday & Sunday from 10:00am-5:00pm (including a lunch break) on 3 separate weekends: February 11-12, March 4-5, and March 25-26.
On-shift training will begin Monday March 6th.
Monday shifts are from 5:30-9:00pm and Wednesdays from 6:00pm-9:00pm.
We will expand services to Thursdays from 5:30pm-9:00pm and Sundays, exact times TBD, but most likely mid to late afternoons.
We expect that on-shift training requirements will take ~2 months to complete, but this may vary based on the individual. This is not a competition, so it’s totally okay if you take longer! Go at a reasonable pace that’s right for you! <3
TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
Attending all in-person trainings.
Completion of all weekly homework assignments, by the end of training March 26th 2023.
Attending 5 training shifts (4 appointment-based shifts (~2 every other week) and one intake coordinating shift) per month. We ask that you miss no more than 2 appointment-based shifts per month during your training, but we understand that things happen, so let’s work together :)
We expect trainees to engage in meetings and seek outside projects that work towards the collective goals of the section and the clinic. This can include packing hygiene kits, engaging in outreach, researching funding opportunities, organizing around the clinic, or really any other rad idea you have!
Together, these requirements add up to ~20 hours per month. Once you complete the training, commitment reduces to ~10 hours per month.
We strive to have our training be an inclusive space, if you are facing barriers to internet/computer access, and/or if these times are not feasible for your schedule, please reach out to the section coordinator and we can work something out!
POST-TRAINING REQUIREMENTS
We do not have strict requirements but ask that all members make a sustainable and consistent commitment. What this usually looks like is:
3 shifts per month (two appointment-based shifts and one intake coordinating shift)
Attending the monthly business meeting
3 hours of off-shift tasks per month (most members choose a specific off-shift role)
1 All-Clinic Meeting per year
A commitment of AT LEAST 1.5 YEARS including training. Every member commits to helping recruit/train the next cohort of trainees and must complete an exit interview before leaving to minimize the knowledge and experience that is lost when members leave.
