Something I stumbled upon recently. Considering the number of book lovers around Mastodon, this seems like a must-share.

"Standard Ebooks is a volunteer-driven project that produces new editions of public domain ebooks that are lovingly formatted, open source, free of U.S. copyright restrictions, and free of cost."

ARC says they’ll release #FutureFellowships #FT24 outcomes tomorrow (30 Jul).

Good luck to all the applicants!

Others: Make some space tomorrow for helping applicants you know. Most will need it.

Here’s how I’m blocking “artificial intelligence” bots, crawlers, and scrapers.

The National Film Board of Canada (NFB / ONF) has shut down its #library and layed-off personnel. A petition is circulating to request a reversal of these moves https://www.change.org/p/stop-the-cuts-to-the-nfb-library --> Please sign it and help circulate it. The library was a valuable resource to film-makers, students, historians, and many others.

For years, I'd heard from a librarian there essentially describing being gradually starved of resources. The doublespeak in the news release is really ugly https://www.canada.ca/en/national-film-board/news/2024/04/nfb-modernization-initiative-will-increase-documentary-and-animation-production-budgets.html

The Art and Science of Speaking (into Microphones) at Conferences

Speaking at conferences is one of those things that you may find yourself in a position to do as a GLAM worker for which nothing in your career has really prepared you and this bit of writing here is meant to help you with that. By this I don't mean it will teach you how to make an engaging presentation. I have no clue how to do that.

Australian media diversity.

Absolutely crazy.

In Alabama, a town never held elections for mayor. Instead the position was passed on from white man to white man like the crown of a kingdom.

But in 2020 Patrick Braxton decided to file the paperwork to be a real official candidate for mayor, and as no one else filed, he became mayor by default.

But then the locks on the town hall suddenly changed…

CNN has the full story, and it is pretty wild:

Research finds inequitable power dynamics behind the camera on Australian film sets are pernicious and persistent.

Camera departments are highly skewed to male employment, write @bronnny123 (@rmit)+ @beneltham (@MonashUni)+ @bestqualitycrab (@UTSengage).

Film camera departments operate on a system of who you know, so what happens when you're not a member of the in-group?

Our recently published research finds inequitable power dynamics behind the camera on Australian film sets are pernicious and persistent.
