Five years ago I made a Twitter post calling for employees of
@wikimediafoundation to organize a union. Yesterday a group of us came out publicly to all other staff as being actively engaged in that effort. I’m proud of everyone who has helped get us to this new milestone and I look forward to being part of a recognized bargaining unit in the future.
Reviewing a particular class of photos from my adventures in Portugal last month.
A three pack probably won’t even last me an hour, but the thought is nice.
Monday was air travel day. Our party broke up at the Lisbon airport with some folks going north and others going west. It took about 24 hours to get back to Boise via New York and Salt Lake City. The JFK to SLC leg reminded me that long haul domestic flights in the US are not my favorite. I did get to see two different LEGO stores though as a consolation prize.
Saturday was a travel day. We took a train from Porto to Lisbon. Sam and I took a lot of photos at the station. At one point I wondered if anyone was watching us and worried that we were preparing for some sort of heist. :)
Thursday’s activity was a trip to Livraria Lello, one of the oldest bookstores in Portugal. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Livraria_Lello
The store has become so popular as a tourist attraction that you have to purchase tickets in advance to enter. We did the “platinum” tour and again sort of got lucky to be the only group in our time slot. The rare books room and private collections were pretty neat.
Wednesday’s planned outing was a trip to the Vista Alegre pottery in nearby Ílhavo. We had the whole museum basically to ourselves as we explored 200 years of their history. There were quite a few folks visiting the gift shop and outlet for Christmas shopping however.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vista_Alegre_(company)Tuesday we caught a bus up to Porto for the next leg of our expedition. The view from our new apartment is more urban than the Nazare seaside, but I do really love Porto architecture.
Monday was a lazy day hiding from the rain. I was sort of fascinated by this congress of sea birds hanging out at the tide line. The sea kept tossing up mussels, and they were waiting like they had called for the delivery.
