I’m going to make the FediVerse a tiny bit more decentralized soon, by moving to my own @gotosocial instance. The new account will be @bart .

Oh wow. @quietui https://quietui.org/ just switched from source available to an MIT license!

Thank you so much @claviska !

Quiet UI

A UI library for the Web with a focus on accessibility, longevity, performance, and simplicity.

I know from existing on the internet that a “credit score” is a thing in the USA. But it’s not a universal phenomenon.

Here’s an example of a company admitting that what they did in the Dutch market was illegal, they’ll pay a fine, they’ve stopped operations in the Netherlands and they’ll destroy the database with personal data.
That’s what the GDPR gives us. https://mastodon.nl/@nrc_nl/115388567354059381

“Meanwhile, wise people (and Sam Altman) are starting to talk about AI possibly being a bubble that is about to burst” https://eupolicy.social/@bert_hubert/115382754425005060

With the AI-bubble looking close to bursting, here I present a pre-mortem, in which I state that much of AI is simultaneously mega-impressive and still mostly useless. The collapse of the bubble does not mean the technology will go away, however. Also, there are extremely useful AI applications already that we should not lose sight of once we are post-collapse. Plus some thoughts on 'intelligence' & evolution: https://berthub.eu/articles/posts/an-ai-premortem/

I think Saxon 13 is going to require Java 17. You might have opinions about that. https://blog.saxonica.com/norm/2025/10/15-saxon13.html

I made a thing called Wellness Ping because someone I care about went silent and it took too long for anyone to notice.

You get regular check-ins via email. If you don't respond, your emergency contacts get notified.

Built it for anyone who might go missing and needs someone to notice: activists, journalists, researchers, solo folks.

I paid for premium hosting (high-reliability VPS in Sweden) and a quality email provider because uptime actually matters for something like this. Also paying extra for minimal data retention (7 days email activity, working toward zero content storage).

Free forever (as long as I'm alive) and open source.

“Uncritical adoption of AI, will inevitably create people without critical thinking, and this may be a feature - not a bug, as it represents an attack on human agency itself. The capacity to think, write, and communicate effectively is fundamental to being a conscious participant in democratic society. When these capabilities are delegated to machines, we create a population that consumes and regurgitates information without actually processing or understanding it.”

The infrastructure of meaninglessness

Listen, there are two realities that we should be aware of. AI exists to make your job obsolete because the alternative is that AI makes managers obsolete. Let me try to break down this theory, which is very simple in its premise: those who control the technology will never allow

our collective futures
@bartschuller I'd like to be able to... draw inspiration from other peoples sites, being able to copy out the HTML for a whole tree instead to a local text file I can play with without the rest of the site emitting events or messing with the DOM would be handy, so I can tweak various values and see how behaviour changes.

The word 'Vrede' jumped out at me from this 'Peace' installation. 'Vrede' is Danish for anger, fury, wrath. I wondered if it was an artistic provocation. But it seemed too confined to chance, that someone who happens to understand Danish happens to see this German artwork. So I looked it up and learned that 'vrede' is Dutch for 'peace'.

Vrede. Peace in Dutch. Wrath in Danish. I wonder if there's a word for words like these, that mean the opposite in different languages.
