It has been a month focused on community, with time spent at Abbeydale Live and the Sustainable Market, chatting to so many people about what we do. Back in the shop, we have also welcomed new makers into The Fair Alternative, bringing more independent creativity onto the shelves. A simple but positive month. ♻️
Any bottle can be reused for refill shopping ♻️
At our Sheffield refill shop, you can bring your own containers, even something unexpected, and refill essentials like washing up liquid or laundry products. We also have labels available to help keep track of what is inside.
In April, our community added 1025 refills, bringing the 2026 total to 3625 single-use bottles and packaging items saved from SESI refills alone 🌍

Wendy creates handmade reusable bags and accessories using cotton fabrics, focusing on low-waste production and practical alternatives to single-use plastics.
Her work began by replacing plastic party bags with reusable fabric ones, and has grown into a thoughtful handmade range.

Over the last few posts, we have been talking about textile waste and what we can do about it.
This feels like an important final piece. Even when something seems too worn out to repair, it does not mean it has reached the end of its life.
Textiles can still be repurposed and kept in use, rather than ending up in landfill.
It is not always about fixing everything ourselves, but knowing there are still better options out there.
Yesterday we talked about textile waste, and how big the problem can feel.
This is what part of the solution looks like in practice. Clothes that have been locally sourced, repaired, and reworked to keep them in use for longer.
Projects like this are happening right here in Sheffield, showing that small, practical actions really do add up.
Today is Earth Day 🌍
It is a chance to reflect on how our everyday choices impact the planet, and how small changes can add up over time.
Hearing stats like this really puts things into perspective. 92 million tonnes of textile waste goes to landfill in the UK every year, with around 30kg per household in Sheffield alone.
It is not about being perfect, but being more mindful. Repairing, reusing, and making things last longer all help reduce that impact.
