Today, a ‘twin under the skin’ of the recently featured Wartburgs - East Germany’s Barkas B 1000 van, introduced in 1961. With its two-stroke engine and front-wheel drive layout, it shared its Auto Union heritage and many parts with the Wartburg 353. And like the Wartburg, it got a VW four-stroke engine in 1989, although this wasn’t enough to save a space-efficient and once advanced - but by then ancient - design. Snapped: Techno Classica Essen, 2023.
