Sometimes, it's a nice distraction to research a phrase you've never come across before.

In the 1930s, “mushroom club” = “pop-up club”

I read a lot of 19th and early 20th century novels — not surprising from somebody who became enamored of Sam Weller at the age of 11 (see: Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers). So it’s n…

I haven't attended a lot of readings since the pandemic, but one of the few I have attended -- although, admittedly, not often enough -- is Randee Dawn's Brooklyn Books & Booze @ Barrow’s Intense. It takes place once a month, every third Tuesday at an interesting bar in Brooklyn's Industry City that specializes in ginger liqueurs (although it offers other drinks as well).

Here's my end of the year roundup blog -- I managed to get two stories published this year, so I thought I'd add them to the other lists I've seen.

End of the year round-up

I’ve seen some year-end reminders of some of the great fiction that my writer friends had published this year. So I thought I’d add my own list to theirs. I actually managed to get two …

Since Amazon is no longer selling subscriptions to print and Kindle magazines, your favorite independent-press mag may be undergoing hard times.
Support it by going to the pub's website and subscribing. For example, subs for The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction can be found via Weightless Books (https://weightlessbooks.com/the-magazine-of-fantasy-and-science-fiction-6-issue-subscription/). It's got some great fiction (the fact that they recently published my story "Time and Art" has nothing to do with it whatsoever, of course!).

This Tuesday, Aug 1st, at 7 pm, I'll be in conversation with the fabulous writer and editor Sheree Renée Thomas as part of the NYRSF Readings. We'll both read short passages, and talk about F&SF, upcoming projects, and whatever else comes up. Hope to see you there, on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/@JimFreund/streams.

As a confirmed Otis fan, I was happy to see the bear in his usual place on the edge of the waterfall, catching and salmon with his usual efficiency. But this is yet another reminder (as if we needed one) of the consequences of global warming. Meanwhile, I'll keep my fingers crossed that my favorite bear will be able to stuff himself with enough fish to survive the eventual coming of winter. https://wapo.st/44WYNhU
Today is officially Fool's Paradise Day! I plan to celebrate it by pretending I don't know what AQI means.

I've spent the last two or more weeks working on a project called Smart Home Week, where we have a bunch of articles on -- you guessed it -- smart homes. So the first of ten articles just hit. Taking a deep breath.... https://www.theverge.com/23749376/smart-home-explained-voice-assistant-tv-gadgets
