im a guy who likes horror movies

Here’s a thought on the current heatwave that is absolutely destroying humankind across Europe atm: maybe we should push for a regulation to allow people — ALL people — to stop working in temperatures above 30C. The economy would collapse and finally politicians would take fighting the climate crisis as a priority, rather than leaning into the bullshit narrative that “summer is summer” from their air-conditioned ivory towers.

Obsession made 300x its budget, directed by YouTube sketch comedian Curry Barker.

Its been about a week since I left the theater after seeing Obsession for the first time. I have found myself thinking about it every day since. I havent been able to fully decipher my thoughts on it so I have decided to go back again tomorrow to watch it for a second time in theatres to digest everything. I will post a full review tomorrow after I leave to give a more fleshed-out opinion on it.

Obsession is in it's own class altogether. I tend to avoid Blumhouse when I'm looking for a quality, truly scary movie because i find most Blumhouse pictures to be cliche and rely too heavily on jumpscares.
This movie is not that. Obsession is downright eerie. Its visceral and uncomfortable and stifling. It is also comedic, and it blends tones from scene to scene and you dont know whether to laugh or scream.

It stayed true to the source material and played on the horror of liminality and the mind. I felt the CGI was a bit out of place at times but all around it was really enjoyable.
The thing about this movie, and Obsession, is you can feel the influence of the studios behind them. I love A24, they produce movies that tend to scratch a particular itch for me. You know when you're watching an A24 film. Its bright, popping colours. Its subtle, tense atmospheres and evocative soundtracks.

Backrooms is a found footage horror film directed and co-written by 20 year old Kane Parsons - known online as Kane Pixels - and produced by A24. It topped charts during its opening weekend and made almost 30x it's budget on international release.
Kane Parsons created a viral horror series based on the concept of the Backrooms and the horror of liminal spaces.
This movie was phenomenal, especially considering the age of the director.

This movie is not dialogue heavy. In fact there are periods of time where youre sitting in silent spells, taking in the atmosphere and soundscapes, crafted to make your skin crawl. I felt inspiration from other sci-fi horror movies, particularly Alien.
While it had its flaws, it was an enjoyable movie i have found to be highly rewatchable and in combination with Kane Parsons and Curry Barker, Mark Fischbach has helped legitimatise youtubers and other online creators in traditional media

Iron Lung is an independent sci-fi horror based on a video game. Because it is an independent film, Mark Fischbach had sufficient control to see the project through exactly how he envisioned.
The movie was 2nd in its opening week in terms of gross earnings and 1st in terms of tickets sold.
First off, one unique aspect of the movie is that its a "bottle film", a movie that takes place in a confined space, usually dialogue heavy.

I want to talk about what a year its been so far for the horror genre

I was planning on doing a piece breaking down Iron Lung and how it will impact the future of horror, but I can't talk about youtuber's impact on the genre now without bringing up Obsession and Backrooms.

I want to start with Iron Lung as I feel there are a lot of aspects that set it apart from Obsession and Backrooms:
