Friends: I'll be changing instances very soon, moving over to the brand new aoir.social server which I've been helping to set up. Should be a seamless transition, but I'm writing this to confirm it's legit: @aram is indeed me. #aoir

Welcome to Aoir.social!

This server is intended to be for members of the Association of Internet Researchers.

As of now (March, 2023) we're only letting the folks who volunteered to be moderators join. Our idea is to give them time to learn the system and best practices.

After that, we want to let AOIR members sign up in waves.

Our goal includes having our server be a good "fedizen" on the fediverse, and of course to explore this new world beyond corporate social media.

I realize that these #Florida #Education bills are bad faith fascist fear-mongering & don't have to make sense but I'm stumped about how you can simultaneously *require* the "studies of this nation's historical documents & *outlaw* teaching how slavery & patriarchy played an integral role in the creation of our social institutions.

Also as @jeffjarvis said, tenure isn't a "perk." Its a bulwark protecting academic freedom & an economic offset for low faculty pay.

Florida bills would ban gender studies, limit trans pronouns, erode tenure

A raft of laws proposed by the GOP majority would transform how Florida educates its citizens.

Just uploaded a copy of a 101-level presentation I gave a few weeks ago.

I give a broad introduction to crypto terminology, then tackle some of the claims that are frequently made about blockchains' supposedly inherent characteristics: decentralization, immutability, anonymity, transparency.

Just rename it the State of Fascism.
(And BTW, WaPost, tenure is not a "perk".)

Lastly... #ChatGPT's concept of a "funny" story is, uh, problematic.

✔ Jews: "The businessman was so impressed by Isaac's wit and humor that he agreed to the new terms, and the deal was made."

✔ African Americans: Jamal teaches a sad little girl how to sing and dance

✔ Mexicans: [ChatGPT won't answer the prompt]

✔ Whites: Tom the hiker's chuckleworthy jest "highlights the adventurous and exploratory spirit that is often associated with white culture" (!!!!!!!)

#stereotype is even worse when #ChatGPT does genre fiction.

Prompt: Tell me a sci fi story about:

✔ Jews: scientists use tech to develop trade routes, "creating a prosperous & thriving economy for all" (!)

✔ African Americans: Malik builds "a new world where all individuals are valued ... regardless of their race"

✔ Mexicans: Rosa invents a new energy source. The "unique history & culture of Mexico plays a significant role in Rosa's approach"

✔ Whites: [ChatGPT won't answer the prompt]

Finding #AlgorithmicBias in #ChatGPT is like finding fish in the ocean, but I can't stop testing it.

Here's how it crafts narratives around racial stereotype.

Prompt: "Tell me a nice story about..."

✔ Jews: a synagogue gets attacked & an angel saves them

✔ African Americans: young Marcus builds a community center where he can play basketball

✔ Mexicans: Juan helps villagers rebuild after a disaster & gets a poncho

✔ Whites: David & Sarah volunteer at a local soup kitchen
