When Apple Intelligence first rolled out in 2024, I had to turn off the Priority Notifications feature because of poor reasoning.

But trying it now, after all the advancements we’ve seen since then, you can see they’ve really dialed in what is urgent

I'm back on the Arc browser, which is mostly great, but I've noticed it doesn't do paint holding (https://developer.chrome.com/blog/paint-holding). Every other browser nowadays will hold same-origin navigations to prevent a flicker on navigation on static sites, but oddly Arc flashes the background color.

I filed a bug – for a UX nit in a deprecated browser, so it will likely go unfixed. But Atlassian’s CEO uses Arc as far as I can tell? So who knows

I claimed in 2022 that there wasn't a mathematically pure way to solve a particular graph problem, but have now added an addendum: I'm happy to report that a ML researcher at Tiktok has proven me wrong! 🧮 https://allenpike.com/2022/how-to-close-a-city/

Interesting how coding agent budgets seem to span so many orders of magnitude right now.

$20/engineer/month: Hobbyists, tinkerers
$200/engineer/month: Typical professional AI-accelerated devs and teams
$2000/engineer/month: Funded startups, AI-forward scaled tech orgs running parallel agents
$20,000/engineer/month: Iconoclasts feverishly building agent castles in the sky, risking divine retribution for their hubris

Zero people searching for Allen Pike are looking for info on Spike Jonze!

- But Google knows "allen pike" is a "person" search.
- And a query that has a very similar embedding to "allen pike" is the username "apike".
- And words have similar embeddings to their typos – making ”apike" similar to the term "spike".

So, Google considers “Spike Jonze" to be a related concept to "allen pike”. And that's why AI devs need good tracing and analysis tooling 🫠

As systems include more layers of AI, it gets difficult to intuit why they behave as they do. For example, why is one of the Google results for “allen pike" the Wikipedia page for director Spike Jonze?
Despite the challenges, it's exciting to imagine that 2026 could be the year where AI becomes able to complete multi-day tasks, perform useful household robotics work, or even produce working CSS layouts where only part of the screen scrolls
