Update. "Elon #Musk’s fellowship of the #RoyalSociety remains intact after a meeting of the scientific body, the Guardian has learned, but questions remain about whether further action will be taken…Earlier on Monday, the Nobel laureate and AI pioneer #GeoffreyHinton – a fellow of the Royal Society – posted on X that he supported Musk’s removal. “I think Elon Musk should be expelled from the British Royal Society. Not because he peddles conspiracy theories and makes Nazi salutes, but because of the huge damage he is doing to scientific institutions in the US."

An attempt to #introduction in addition to my homepage (in finnish):

A (re)tired academic professional interested in thinking, knowledge and understanding, and the obstacles for such at any level. Epistemic security, for instance, is a serious concern for me, https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20210209-the-greatest-security-threat-of-the-post-truth-age

My intellectual toolkit stems mostly from philosophy of science, epistemology, and teaching critical thinking at university-level. Deep learning and inquiry has been a constant lifeline for me, which a slowly progressing AD is (not so mercifully) severing. My physical toolkit stemming from a few martial arts and long hikes is eroded by other ailments.

I tend to listen carefully, think and respond slowly, forget way too easily, value silence, and have no more time for identity-politics or other ego-defensive pastimes. What I don't understand is why all the pain near and far hasn't stolen my incongruence-based sense of humour yet? 🤔

My boosts mirror my core-interests, but I tend to like people in general.

The greatest security threat of the post-truth age

The terms "national security" or "cyber-security" may be familiar – but what about "epistemic security"?

Kudos to #StephenCurry (@StephenCurry) for his open letter to the #RoyalSociety, pointing out that Elon #Musk has violated the society's code of conduct, and asking it to remove him from the Fellows of the Royal Society (#FRS), to which he was elected in 2018.

(Curry calls for signatures from "all members of the UK or international scientific community" and I just signed.)

Kudos to #DorothyBishop (@deevybee) as well, who made the same call in her Nov 2024 letter of resignation from the society.

"The @wikimediafoundation is building new tools that it hopes will help #Wikipedia editors stay anonymous in part to avoid #harassment and #LegalThreats as Elon #Musk and the #HeritageFoundation ramp up their attacks on people who edit Wikipedia. Some of the tactics have been pioneered by Wikimedia in countries with #authoritarian governments and where editing Wikipedia is illegal or extremely dangerous."

Wikipedia Prepares for 'Increase in Threats' to US Editors From Musk and His Allies

The Wikimedia Foundation says it will likely roll out features previously used to protect editors in authoritarian countries more widely.

Statement from the Association for Psychological Science, APS

“Science is a global, collaborative endeavor that is strongest when scientists are free to participate, engage, share findings, and learn from colleagues. In recent weeks, scientific research and education in the United States has been disrupted and censored. Government scientists have been encouraged to quit their jobs and directed to not participate with their professional communities. We recognize that these recent attacks on U.S. science have been or are currently threats encountered by scientists in other countries. United, we have an opportunity to strengthen science around the world.”

👆#AcademicFreedom might seem a small and esoteric thing to worry about in the context of what is unfolding in the US, but it is essential to science. It’s enshrined in UNESCO declarations and, in many countries, it’s enshrined in law. For example, in Germany, Art 5, III guarantees freedom of science (along with freedom of press and the arts) as a fundamental human right that constitutes part of the core of Germany’s constitutional order, an inviolable core that cannot be abolished by law, even through changes to the constitution itself (see Art. 79, GG). In the UK it is guaranteed by the UK universities act.

It matters!
