Who leave behind nothing but trails of dense-seeded scat.
My palms upward cupped, I wait for something to fall, waiting
As another pale afternoon too quickly shades to dusk.

Thought I would put this up here in the timeline: I am EIC for BMJ Medical Humanities. Here is what #MedicalHumanities means to me: a broad, dynamic field that includes history, social sciences, anthro, literature, public policy, activism, health practice, and the arts. It cuts across disciplines, multi-lens in an approach to issues of health and the lived experience. Not about ‘doctors’ and ‘patients’ in particular but a conversation among all sectors of the public in a whole-person approach.
“AI models presume that thought is entirely a matter of pattern recognition, and these patterns, already inscribed in the corpus of the internet, can be mapped once and for all, with human ‘thinkers’ always already trapped within them. The possibility that thought could consist of pattern breaking is eliminated.”

What of the national throat?

I’ve been reading articles about ChatGPT all week, ordering them in my mind to make the discourse about it into a kind of coherent narrative that has ebbed and flowed from excitement to panic to backlash to counter-backlash. It’s apparently never to late to say “it’s early days” with generative AI, or to rehash concerns that have been aired with each new development in the means of mechanical reproduction.

TSA now wants to scan your face at security. Here are your rights.

16 major domestic airports are testing facial-recognition tech to verify IDs — and it could go nationwide in 2023.

EV Charging Station in Paris in 1898

In Europe & the US there were many competing electric, gas, and steam vehicle companies in 1890s to 1910s. This a woodcut work of art of a Paris electric vehicle charging station in 1898.

It is a photo of a wood engraving. It is by Gravure van Poyet & public domain.

Effective Altruism Is Pushing a Dangerous Brand of ‘AI Safety’

This philosophy—supported by tech figures like Sam Bankman-Fried—fuels the AI research agenda, creating a harmful system in the name of saving humanity

"The irony is that while US and European politicians depict this as a problem stemming from authoritarian regimes, systems that rank and penalize people are already in place in the West. Algorithms designed to automate decisions are being rolled out en masse and used to deny people housing, jobs, and basic services." https://www.technologyreview.com/2022/11/29/1063777/the-ai-myth-western-lawmakers-get-wrong/

I'm always kinda skeptical of the Very Serious Academics who spend a lot of time criticizing the criticism of big, large, dominating, extractivist systems—sectors like tech, finance, insurance; or regimes like capitalism—for the purpose of reeling it back in the name of nuance.
