Apologies for not being ashamed of my hands and not bothering to use a filter 😅 #knitting

Made a mistake a few stitches back?

Here’s how to un-knit (=TINK) stitches. The process is the same whether you’re undoing knit or purl stitches (unless they were knitted through the back loop) 🧶🧶🧶 #knitting

To get a smooth and jogless cast off edge when #knitting in the round, complete the chain formed at the top before sewing in the end 😉👌

I was recently asked how I knit button bands. I like to use linen stitch, which is sturdy and non-stretchy. If there’s one thing I hate in this world, it’s gaping button bands 😱 😱 😱

If the garment is in stocking stitch, I pick up one stitch per row.

There’s one rule I really don’t like to break in #knitting: no knots!
To join skeins, I sew the yarn ends into each other. I believe this is known as the mango join.
For better results, start by fraying or tearing the yarn ends to taper them.
If you are working with natural fibers, rub the join between your hands with a drop of water for a smoother join.

What I like about the Norwegian purl is that whether you are about to knit or purl, you always position the yarn the same way.

This is especially important at the beginning of a row, where most beginners’ mistakes occur.

Whether you should knit, purl or slip the first stitch, is a separate discussion.

My answer: whatever works best for the project at hand. The more techniques you have in your toolbox, the better!

How to make rope cables #knitting

This is the textbook way of making rope cables:

C6B: slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle, leave at back of work, knit next 3 sts, knit 3 from cable needle.
C6F: slip next 3 stitches onto a cable needle, leave at front of work, knit next 3 stitches, knit 3 from cable needle.

Personally though, I prefer not to use a cable needle, because I find it too fiddly.

Working without one is faster, but riskier 🤓

As was rightly pointed out to me, the Italian cast on is often followed by 2 rows of single-colour double #knitting before passing on to ribbing to create a tubular cast on, which looks really neat! 👌 🧶🧶🧶

Single-colour double knitting is worked as follows: [K1, sl1p with the yarn in front] and repeat 🔁

Italian cast on 🇮🇹

Very suitable for ribbing, double #knitting and brioche 🧶🧶🧶

Be careful not to twist the stitches!

💡Cast on the last stitch using the long-tail method to anchor the stitches 🙌
