Notes From The Overground
Next time, just for fun, #JNU peeps should dress up as lawyers when they go marching. Lets see how cops touch them then.

#BJP MP for East Delhi, Gautam Gambhir, decided to skip a high-level meeting on #Delhi pollution for a more important engagement with pohas and jalebis. 25 other MPs also skipped it. Only 4 turned up, out of which 3 are non-BJP MPs.

But let's blame Kejriwal for not doing anything.

Heights of apathy! High-level panel meet to discuss Delhi pollution cancelled as only four of 29 MPs turn up

The display of such extreme apathy comes at a time when Delhi and its adjoining cities remain enveloped in a thick layer of smog for the fourth consecutive day on Friday.

What a week for justice for the #Rohingya!

The International Criminal Court has allowed chief prosecutor, Fatou Bensouda, to go ahead with a full-scale investigation into the abuses and crimes against humanity committed by the #Myanmar military against the Rohingya. Although the case is routed through #Bangladesh (since Myanmar is not an #ICC member), this is a big step towards ending the impunity of perpetrators.

@suhrith and I wrote a piece on the Ayodhya judgment.

We asked if the judgment is legally correct; and if isn't, whether it is nonetheless justified as an act of "judicial statesmanship" that lets the country move on.

We believe that the answer to both those questions is "no".

Peace bought by an unequal compromise

We must be wary of verdicts that align cleanly with what appears to be the dominant public sentiment at a given time

Another #genocide case filed against #Myanmar, this time specifically against Aung San Suu Kyi, in an #Argentina court under the "universal jurisdiction" principle.

Myanmar's Aung San Suu Kyi faces first legal action over Rohingya crisis

Case launches in Argentina under ‘universal jurisdiction’ demanding justice over ‘existential threat’ to minority

"The revised fee will make JNU more expensive than even Delhi University, currently at the top of the table with an annual fee of Rs 40,000- Rs 55,000, including food and accommodation."

This - the brutal assault on quality public education - is what you should outrage over, not a few slogans someone wrote on the pedestal of a random, unopened statue.

After hostel fee hike, JNU will become India's most expensive central university

The JNU administration’s fee hike nearly doubles the annual expense for students living in hostels to Rs 55,000-61,000.

Remember that dubious #UK-based think tank, WESTT, that arranged the visit of 27 far-right MEPs to #Kashmir?

Turns out there's a bigger network of fake news agencies & lobbying organisations peddling spurious "Indian interests" in #Europe and the #US. They are basically lobbying for the #Modi govt by spreading disinformation.

Read this report by EU DisinfoLab, an #EU funded project, who has done in-depth OSINT investigations into this.

Uncovered: 265 coordinated fake local media outlets serving Indian interests - EU DisinfoLab

How could you know that your local news website, such as newyorkmorningtelegraph.com, thedublingazette.com, or timesofportugal.com serves Indian government interests? Here’s the story of how we uncovered this network designed to influence the EU and the UN by repeatedly criticising Pakistan.

I had written this last year. Although in specific context of public versus private schools, some of the thoughts might be relevant to the middle/upper class privilege currenly on naked display against marginalised #JNU students.

The Ghettoisation of Indian Education

The rich wouldn’t like it if their kids had to study in the same classroom as a poor man’s child. Fancy stuff is reserved for them, and no one else.
