IT bod. VM, Storage. Interests: Guitars, tech, silliness. Views: Mixed but clearing later.

I work at a Uni and am responsible for Servers, Storage, VMware and other associated infrastructure functions. Opinions/views/images are all my own.

Here is a list of things that interest me and, on the whole, make my life better:

What a lovely day. Here's my bottle of Henderson's Relish that was in my desk drawer that I couldn't find the key for. Amusingly access was gained by lifting up the top of the drawer, rendering the lock useless...

I gave the bottle to a colleague on my last day, 28 February 2025. Take a look at the Best Before date.

*edit - this is a limited edition bottle from The Rutland Hotel on Glossop Road, 5 minutes from my former office.

The view in the other direction. Lovely leaves.

The tyranny of the leaf-blower.

I've seen the elderly chap diligently blowing the leaves from the pavement, and the bit of grass-verge in front of his house, into the road and also further up the pavement to the boundary of the next house. The futility lost on him as with the next gust of wind it'll all be rearranged.

I heard a professional gardener talking about research that says a rake requires only slightly less effort, plus you can create leafmould to use a soil conditioner.

What's been on the reading list, data burst continuation. The Basics of Essay Writing, Nigel Warburton. Thought this would be interesting, and it was. If I ever need to write an essay then I'll be able to take an informed approach. If only I'd read it before I wrote any essays, although I didn't really have to write many for my CS degree just over a decade ago, but even so, it would have helped. #Study #Skills
What's been on the reading list, data burst continuation. RadCom magazine, for radical communists everywhere, no wait, what, it actually stands for Radio Communications. Who knew. It's the monthly magazine of the RSGB (Radio Society of Great Britain) which as a member I receive monthly. #Radio #RSGB
What's been on the reading list, data burst continuation. The art of thinking clearly by Rolf Dobelli. I've read this a number of times, it contains a vast number of biases and fallacies that humans easily become drawn into. Listing and describing them is done in a way to help us identify when we are subject to wayward thinking. Really useful. 99 things are identified, some of which are variations on others. #Bias
What's been on the reading list, data burst continuation. Fretboard Journal issue 54. A high quality guitar magazine that specialises in long-form interviews with musicians, luthiers and others related to music and guitar. It is a bit pricey, it is only quarterly, it barely contains any adverts, it has to be sent from the USA, and there are only 8250 issues printed per quarter. It is a good read though, I try to ration my reading but it's soon finished. #Guitar #Fretboard #Journal

What's been on the reading list since the last time I posted a "What's been on the reading list" style post. Data burst incoming.

British Politics, A Very Short Introduction. Third edition. Updated with a bit about the mad, foolish period that included Brexit but not the continued chaos that came after with that same cast of arseholes. These books are always worth a read & give a perspective on the complexity that fruitcakes on the right and left conveniently pretend doesn't exist. #Politics

This is a really great book, informative and funny. The only thing I share in common with the author is that we both memorised pi to 100 decimal places, he was 11, I was in my late 50s. Read his book, I haven't written one, don't read mine. Lev Parikian, Taking #Flight
In between the foxes, badgers, cats and the neighbour dog we have this on the garden cam - a performance #pigeon #Sheffield
