Today's #Hubble favorite is M51. It's a pair of two interacting galaxies, NGC 5194, the Whirlpool Galaxy, and its companion galaxy NGC 5195. The image was taken to celebrate Hubble's 15th anniversary in 2005.

The Whirlpool Galaxy is a grand design spiral. Its arms may be so prominent because of a series of close encounters with NGC 5195, the small, yellowish galaxy behind the outermost tip of one of its arms.

In this timelapse, #Hubble offers a rare view of an astronomical phenomenon visibly evolving over a span of only 14 years. Herbig-Haro 47 is a jet emanating from a pair of still-forming stars, creating bow-shaped shock waves: https://bit.ly/3DF2Q6P

Hail June

As i look at all the news
the forest fires, floods
and hail storms in June
I'm reminded that I need
to book some time away,
in the sun,
soon

I think I'll look at those places
where the fires haven't reached
where floods have deluged
and there's still sand on the beach

then I'm reminded to think about the environment
and what i could do about it soon
I'll definitely do something, maybe
on my holiday
next June

Wowzer. Absolutely scandalous. We live in a profoundly corrupt country.

One of the highlights of the collections of the Archäologisches Landesmuseum Baden-Württemberg: A remarkably well-preserved Late Neolithic flint dagger found in Allensbach at the Lake Constance, southwest #Germany, dating 2900-2800 BC. The blade was made of flint from Monte Baldo, northern #Italy. It was fastened with birch tar in a handle made of elderwood.

It takes a keen eye to spot a microbe grazing on some viruses! Biologist John DeLong & his colleagues tagged the viruses with a fluorescent glow to see if anything was eating them.

Sure enough, it turns out that several different types of microbes appear to be snacking on viruses.
