Today we got our dishwasher fixed under warranty. To diagnose it, the tech stuck a photosensor+magnet onto the front panel over the green status LED and started reading diagnostics. It turns out the status LED is actually a serial port*, and it's continually transmitting status.

I can think of so many gadgets that could and should use this trick...

*It's probably something other than regular serial -- a UART's TX would flicker. I don't know any details.

@danielgibert https://www.discworldemporium.com/product/the-ankh-morpork-art-print/ Just so you know... There's also a jigsaw version of it, and the "The Compleat Ankh-Morpork city guide and map" has a fold-out version
The Ankh-Morpork Art Print | Terry Pratchett's Discworld | Posters

Enjoy a spectacular aerial view of Ankh-morpork, premier city from Terry Pratchett's Discworld books with this incredible illustration by Peter Dennis!

Years ago I bought an interactive map & guide to Anhk-Morpork, very impressive, with both a map and an aerial view up to the last detail. The app never updated and soon become incompatible, big loss. I dismantled it and recovered the 23766 tiles of 256x256 pixels each that composed the two images. I've been slowly rebuilding the aerial one into a giant 24064 x 16896 px image. Already 3/4 done. I intend to print a great poster for my studio. Detail is insane. #GNUTerryPratchett #DiscWorld

It’s interesting to me that the Photos icon just prior to the new one is actually a more expressive ‘glass’ effect.

Look closely at the interaction of the shapes, colours, and translucency. https://mastodon.social/@BasicAppleGuy/115022817887216872

I'm on the server floor of a "highly secure data center with 24/7/365 surveillance, direct access control and robust perimeter security".

An actual duck just walked by. 🦆

The panic is absolutely glorious. I think this just became one of the highlights of my life.

House re-roofed. Stray roofing nails collected (from my yard, the neighbor's, and the alley). Homeowner's insurance policy un-cancelled. Mortgage holder notified; now I wait for them to review things and make the insurance payment.

Side note: Insurance company said "reviewing your property; we'll let you know beforehand if we need to access the property". Never notified me but came back with close-up photos. Apparently flying drones overhead is not considered "accessing".

@tjw And OmniImage! And a few other apps I used back in the day.
LIVE: Juneau, Alaska - Glacial Outburst Flood 2025

It’s go time for Mendenhall Lake and River flooding as the Suicide Basin glacier dammed lake is releasing. Be safe Juneau. Reminder that this is entirely a climate change driven hazard due to thinning of the Juneau ice field. Glacier outburst flooding did not occur here prior to 2011. #akwx #ClimateChange

Beware the AI slop infesting Amazon. There are now TWO bogus biographies of me on the platform, written by AI off my self-published books ‘Pressing Matters’ and ‘Life by Satellite’ presumably. You have the choice of paying £89 for 66 pages and no cover or £25 for 134 pages and some stone abomination on the front. Or of course you could just download the real McCoy for £3.99 or £2.99.
