Does your VPN go where it says on the tin?

Many VPN providers are deploying virtual locations as an alternative to providing connectivity via hard-to-host geographies.

I ran a speed test on my VPN's "Eritrea" server and found out most providers fake their locations

Your VPN might not be telling the truth about where you're connected from.

Attended “In the Cloud” how the Met Office are using the Cloud and AI to transform weather and climate intelligence.
Hosted by the Royal Society.

Fascinating talks and demos. Obviously the best was the LLM to Shipping Forecast generator.

As well as the obvious implications to navigation both at sea and in the air, this is a timely reminder not to rely only on satellite-based signals for network time synchronisation.

Surge in GPS interference around Strait of Hormuz increases shipping risks

More than 1,100 vessels have been hit by GPS interference across the Middle East Gulf since the start of the conflict, according to maritime firm Windward. Experts warn these attacks pose severe risks to navigation and are contributing to the de facto blockade of the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

UK-first trial of AI Grid Technology Successfully Demonstrates the Ability of Data Centres to Adjust Power Needs | National Grid

Emerald AI, EPRI, National Grid, Nebius, and NVIDIA today announced a landmark, UK-first demonstration proving high-performance AI infrastructure can operate as a flexible, grid-responsive asset. Using Emerald AI’s software, Emerald Conductor, to manage a cluster of NVIDIA GPUs, the trial validated that artificial intelligence data centres can dynamically adjust power consumption in response to real-time signals, without disrupting critical workloads.

The world’s first transatlantic fiber-optic cable is being ripped up after 37 years on the sea floor — TAT-8 to be removed after entering service in 1988, broke in 2002

Launched in 1988, it provided the blueprint model for every undersea internet cable that followed.

AWS Cloud WAN looks interesting…
…although “AWS Obi” or “AWS Magrathea” would have been a better name.
