Users of #openbsd, what are your must-have/interesting applications/tools/utilities you install on the OS? Extra internet points for things unique to #openbsd (outside the mainstream) from a perspective of learning/tinkering for a #homelab setting (so other than the usual vim, btop, firefox, etc. you get the idea). Thanks in advance!
👀 #OpenBSD #RunBSD Smooth install hot off the press on a 12 year-old MacBook Pro. Turns out all I needed was a cheap (around $8) Ethernet <=> USB adapter and off to the races. Next I’ll try #FreeBSD on it.
nixCraft 🐧Just like 2008 had "Subprime Mortgages (or "Dot Com" crash) that nobody understood, 2026 has "Circular AI Revenue" deals. Ex: Microsoft gives money to OpenAI, who gives it back to Microsoft for Azure credits, which Microsoft then reports as "AI Growth".
Microsoft and Nvidia fund AI startups that buy their own tech back to report "growth." With $600b burning in data centers in 2026 alone but no real revenue to back it up.
If that loop snaps, the "fuck up" will be massive.
Reading the #freebsd Q4 2025 status report, I wonder if the #Parthenope project is meant to be the equivalent of what the #calamares installer does on the #linux side of things. Description certainly reads like it. #runbsd

It's already a bit outdated, but from what I understand the status reports will be published in a more timely manner going forward.
Also check out Ronald Klop's work on updating the default java version in FreeBSD to OpenJDK version 21. The report right below mine.
