It's becoming increasingly clear to me that Reflect Orbital's fucking stupid giant mirror satellite, with absolutely NOTHING useful to offer, which will cause countless safety issues, ecological disasters, and destroy the night sky, is going to launch.
A bunch of astronomers and I have sent out a fact sheet about them to a bunch of journalists, but very few are going to write about this. So, let me try posting it all here.
Here's what I know about Reflect Orbital and all the downsides:
This is a cool AI experiment, a llm trained only on public domain data before 1931. It's predictions post-1930 are telling.
It doesn't get things right as much as shows how patterns can be limiting to prediction.
May have to play with it if I come up with fun questions.

This just made me appreciate Zed even more. Even though it’s marketed as an AI-powered editor, the integration feels much more civilized. It’s there when you want it, but it isn’t constantly thrown in your face.
FUN FACT: the "nano" prefix ultimately descends from Ancient Greek "nanos", which means "dwarf".
Consequently, translating "nanotechnology" as "dwarven machinery" is arguably defensible.
