The HOST file is a lookup table for IP adresses for the OS to spare DNS server lookups. You can put any server url that you don't want to connect with in the list and give it your own 127.0.0.1 or just 0.0.0.0 to make it look as unreachable from any network application. With proper entries it blocks a lot of ads and tracking stuff.
I am not an expert on this and maybe I am wrong, if not, I certainly wouldn't condemn the guy for taking the money. He is seriously ill (at least he says) and I think he could need all the help he can get. He had given a lot to all of us for free for 20 years. I even had an android ad blockng app that uses his host file.
I don't know: I merged the last 2 updates and there were indeed new entries, but there were also removed entries and maybe the removed entries were all bogus. But there were also names removed, that sounded like ad and tracking .
Also a pledge form the site maintainer, regarding health costs made me think.
Does anyone know an actively managed #HOST file*?
My trusted http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm is not longer maintained and I don't rely on it any more, sadly.
The download on this site has no last updated date info any more. About 2 years ago, at a time it claimed to be maintained and added updates regularly, I noticed, that each updated file was a smaller as the last one.

Es tut mir ein bisschen Leid um die feministische Hypothese, dass Frauen eine menschlichere Politik machen, aber Frau #Faeser veranschaulicht ja nun ganz gut, dass die die Ausübung des Innenministeramts offenbar zwangsläufig begleitende Unmenschlichkeit nicht geschlechterspezifisch ist.
Es könnte allerdings auch einfach daran liegen, dass die #SPD in dieser Hinsicht nie viel besser war als die Union.
