Our colleague Hannah Brennhäußer is on her way back from the first European exchange meeting of #ProgrammLOKAL for culture & engagement.
Hannah’s key takeaway from Świdnica: vibrant and impactful cultural work is deeply rooted in small and mid-sized towns, where it plays a vital role in strengthening democracy, social cohesion and local engagement.
Many thanks to @kulturstiftung @europeanculturalfoundation @bpb and Świdnicki Ośrodek Kultury for making this exchange possible.

Missverstehen wir die Jugend (schon wieder)?

Neue Forschungsergebnisse zu den Zukunftsbildern und dem gesellschaftlichen Engagement junger Menschen in Deutschland und Europa.

The Allianz Foundation invests in initiatives and actors who strengthen social cohesion, democratic participation and long‑term resilience across society.

Today our CEO Christian Humborg exchanged thoughts with Dr. Christiane Schenderlein, State Minister for Sport and Civic Engagement, on how civil society organizations, foundations and government can work together to create enabling conditions for engagement. We look forward to continuing this dialogue with our partners.

Meet our Fellow Taras Gembik ✨

Originally from Kamin‑Kashyrskyi, Ukraine, Taras works with people affected by homelessness, migration and displacement. His work strengthens long‑term collaboration with marginalised communities.
As an Allianz Foundation Fellow, he creates spaces for workshops and cultural activities where participants can share experiences, regain agency and connect with others.
Meet our Fellow Elena Tacu ✨️ In Moldova, she brings activists together to process environmental loss, share stories, and rebuild hope. Through interviews, workshops on climate grief and creative writing, as well as nature‑based gatherings, she creates space for collective reflection and healing.
As an Allianz Foundation Fellow, Elena will document these experiences in an anthology that explores how communities cultivate solidarity in the face of environmental change.

Congratulations to Miljenko Jergović, winner of the 2026 Leipzig Book Award for European Understanding.

This year’s Leipzig Book Fair motto, “Donau”, captures how deeply Europe is connected along the river’s route from the Black Forest to the Black Sea. The history of Central and Eastern Europe has unfolded along this river and is inseparable from the region’s cultural diversity. #LBM26

Meet our Fellow Claudia Zini ✨ Based in Sarajevo, she curates safe spaces where people come together to learn from artists who survived war & genocide, and explore how art can help process violence & trauma.
As an Allianz Foundation Fellow, Claudia aims to explore how the methodologies she developed in Bosnia and Herzegovina can be responsibly translated to a wider European context. She will focus on ethical, trauma-informed art connections between war-torn societies such as Bosnia & Ukraine.

We shared the Next Generations Study with Solidarische Vernetzung Sachsen and Kohäsion Ost last week. The big surprise: sustainable, more‑than‑growth futures appeal across left, centre, and right and collective civic action among young people is rising. Grateful for the space for exchange.
