The opening of the #CMP & #CMA was depressing. So much work was left after the #SBSTA and #SBI that parties are starting to prioritize. Since this is the finance COP, this will be the focus. Many parties are also keen to prioritize #MWP, #GGA and #NAP. Very few groups are mentioning #gender. Today is #GenderJusticeDay at #COP29. Parties cannot leave w/o agreeing to the #LWPG and the #GAP, or there will be no global work plan to recognize, advocate and support #genderjustice in #climateaction.

I was fortunate enough to have received an exclusive access pass to the opening plenary on the first of two days of the High Level Segment.

The High Level Segment of #COP16 showed exactly which Heads of State were simply fed lines by a speech writer and which ones are truly committed to #biodiversity.
There was an event today on several #ABS success stories, which included companies that develop flowers, alcohol, perfume, pet beetles, and the country of #Bhutan. #biodiversity #COP16
The #UNDP hosted a round table to discuss their #BiodiversityPolicyAnalyzer, which uses #AI to determine the alignment between the #KMGBF and a country's #NBSAP. We heard from a number of countries that have used the tool and gave feedback & suggestions on how to align the tool with a country's #NDC as well, since nature and climate agendas should always align. #Biodiversity #COP16
We learned today, both at the morning briefing and from the #COP16 president and Minister of the Environment in her midday press conference that 115 Parties have submitted their targets and over 30 have submitted their #NBSAP. Many of the texts are just about ready for final adoption and significant progress has been made on others. It has also been the largest #biodiversity COP ever, with 20,000 participants in the #BlueZone and 40,000 in the #GreenZone.
The event hosted by #UNWomen called "Defending the Women Who Defend the Planet" reminded us that #GenderBasedViolence takes many forms and harm can be caused through #war, #extractivism, #foodinsecurity, lack of #water, etc. Women need to participate, not just consult, in decision-making. #Violence against a woman's body when she is using it to tend to land & #biodiversity should be unimaginable. If there is no safety for #women, there is no safety for anyone. #COP16 #genderjustice #genderequity
I attended the #pressconference of the #CBD Secretariat and learned about all the progress being made by the different contact and working groups of #COP16. It seems WG2 has made tremendous progress and has several documents almost ready for final adoption. WG1 has been hard at work and making progress on Article 8j and #DSI. It will be interesting to see what happens when WG1 meets again on Friday or after. #biodiversity
An inspiring event hosted by #CGIAR on the role of women in peacebuilding and biodiversity conservation. There were speakers from #UNWomen #UNDP and Alliance Biodiversity International #CIAT. There were so many interesting conversations to be had around not only #women participation, but INFLUENCE, in decision-making. #GenderBasedViolence takes many different forms. There is a need to distinguish between merely gender-sensitive and gender-responsive plans. #biodiversity #COP16 #genderjustice
The #Women4Biodiversity group hosted another fantastic panel called Restore HER Rights: Global Insights and Case Studies 2024. Speakers from Myanmar, Kenya, Argentina, and Solomon Island,  presented on the ways that women in their communities support restoration by fighting to protect their land and traditional knowledge, ensure food security and reforestation. #biodiversity #genderjustice #COP16
