My job role has changed, making me no longer sponsored full time for undirected Rust development. Almost 5 years is a good run and I appreciate what my company has allowed me to do in that time and for still providing me a role at the conclusion of that run.

I will be needing to scale back my role on the Cargo team and the maintenance of my crates. What this will look like exactly? I'm not sure yet. Obvious answers are that I will no longer be writing the This Development in Cargo blog series and giving micro-reports here on where my time is going.

Something that will help is that a focus of mine for Cargo and my crates was to streamline maintenance.

So @xaitax has cracked Microsoft Recall, he's got access to the encrypted database and has automated dumping of screenshots and all text from screenshots.

I've looked at most recent Recall and yep, you can just read the database as a user process. The database also contains all manner of fields which aren't publicly disclosed for tracking the user's activity.

No AV or EDR alerts triggered, world's #1 in infostealer 😅

* you can just read it in plain text

Saw this on my way home from @hackeriet , the kids are all right
@Codeberg 's currently fastest server (at 200 km/h!) is on its way to its new home in Frankfurt! 🚂

There is a fun footgun related to compile-time code generation using procedural macros in Rust: if the macro has non-deterministic behavior, then the build process of any crate using it is not reproducible.

Here's a little write-up explaining how I uncovered such an issue in the hashify crate while trying to package Rust software for Guix: https://notes.8pit.net/notes/iqfs.html

❓Have you noticed that digital products and services are getting worse? So have we!

âžĄïžWe have published a report about enshittification, on how and why digital products and services keep getting worse - and how we can turn the trend (hint: open tech, enforcement, public policy++)

Obviously @pluralistic is a big inspiration and help in this work.

I love how easy rayon makes it to introduce a thread-pool to parallelize a problem over in #rust .

3-4 hours of work resulted in -84% running time on one of our benchmarks.

Now it feels stupid that I haven't done this before.

Because Trump is insane.

The stone age didn't end because of a shortage of stone but because something better came along.
