It's complicated...
Yes, the photos are mine.
No, I don't talk to bots or orgs trying to sell something.
Too old to upgrade, too young to scrap
I will definitely block if your only aim appear to be to stir shit. What the world need right now is NOT more shit stirrers.

Amazing volcanic rocks with an added bonus of some patchy grass and orange lichen.

I was only made aware of this (frankly awesome) case of LLM poisoning today: https://www.nature.com/articles/d41586-026-01100-y. A researcher made up a disease and published two evidently fake preprints about it (including sentences such as “this entire paper is made up” and “Fifty made-up individuals aged between 20 and 50 years were recruited for the exposure group”), which were almost immediately picked up by LLMs and documented in their output. Worse, actual – supposedly serious – medical papers also started citing the preprints, demonstrating that academics relying on LLMs to do their work is a genuine problem! Not that I had my doubts but, if anyone did, this seems like the perfect demonstration of the problem. Article immediately added to the syllabus of the class I am co-teaching with Iris Ferrazzo on LLMs for Romance Studies/Humanities!

Scientists invented a fake disease. AI told people it was real

Bixonimania doesn’t exist except in a clutch of obviously bogus academic papers. So why did AI chatbots warn people about this fictional illness?

Teen innovators in Kenya turn farm waste into award-winning vehicle exhaust filter

NAIROBI — Two 17-year-old students from Kiambu county in Kenya were declared winners of the Africa region Earth Prize on May 12, for a low-cost maize- and coconut-based vehicle exhaust filtration system they developed. Fredrick Njoroge Kariuki and Miron Onsarigo, students at M-PESA Foundation Academy, developed the system, HewaSafi, meaning “clean air” in Swahili, after […]

You'd think our leaders would be making a LOT more noise about this, what with the coming local government elections...

Unemployment rate rises 1.3 percentage points to 32.7%

About a third of South Africa’s labour force is without a job, and things are bound to get worse as the economic outlook sours with each passing day of the Middle East war triggered at the end of February by the US and Israeli attacks on Iran.

For today's #TextureTuesday here are some textures. First one looks a bit like Jupiter and latte and a bit of a submarine. Second one is just a texture but I liked green on red! And the third one is bark looks a bit like fire.

Parts of Cape Town are experiencing severe flooding, and this is hitting poorer areas especially hard. Now is a good time to donate some money, if you have some to spare. Decision paralysis? My suggestions:

Gift of the Givers -- they're my go-to organisation for disaster response donations. You can make a general donation or specify where and how you want the money to be used.
https://giftofthegivers.org/donate-online/

PEP Stores Lay By Buddy -- not disaster-specific, but a lot of people are going to have to replace a lot of clothes and other essentials.

Cape of Good Hope SPCA -- they don't just deal with strays; they also provide emergency and veterinary assistance to people who can't afford to pay for it. They're currently also rescuing farm animals (whose loss would have not just a psychological but also a financial impact on their people).

I love this bit of detail!

Some of you may be familiar with scientists giving their discoveries whimsical names. For example there is the INDY gene, short for "I'm Not Dead Yet", a longevity gene. (Look it up!)

Here's another one documented on a roadside sign...

Funcusvermis was named after the song "Funky Worm" by the Ohio Players. 🙂

Note that the actual song appears to be a novelty story set to music.
