Above morning rush-hour traffic this morning, Interstate Route 93 in Boston

A thought about public transit.

Why do we have to pay for it?

We built it. It was our tax money and our labour and our commonly-held land. The buses and trains we bought, we paid for. The people who drive them? We pay that.

So why do we charge people to use it?

We don't charge road users to use the roads. "We pay for them," the drivers say. "So do we pay for them," say I. "We have to have insurance!" "So do transit vehicles."

"We have to pay for our go-juice of choice!" "Us too."

"We have to pay to maintain our own vehicles." "Yep, that's a pain for us too."

So why, exactly, do we provide use of the roads free to people who have the money to have their own vehicle, but NOT to the people who *don't* have that money, or choose not to spend it on a car for all kinds of society-benefiting reasons?

It's ridiculous. In order to facilitate the fare collection, we have to have MORE POLICE in our lives, people going up and down the LRT trains, bothering people trying to journey, and writing expensive tickets if they find someone forgot to tap their card on the out-of-the-way pedestals for such. How many hundreds of thousands are we paying in the salary for that couple of dozen people? Do we come even CLOSE to recovering that money by catching so-called "fare cheats"? No. Nothing like it.

It's a big ripoff, in favour of individual car use, and allows them to underfund our public transit so that it can take me an hour and a quarter to get to an appointment a private vehicle could reach in fifteen minutes, because it's about five km from my apartment. But in our rattletrap system, that's 3 buses.

This kind of thinking is burning our planet and our people alive. And still we hem and haw about whether it's worth the expenditure, and make it easy for people to live 100+km from their place of work - and yet still attend every day.

Madness!

If you're publishing a magazine which is a consumer guide to electric cars and you're not calling it WHAT EVS then you're wasting everybody's fucking time.

Ruby 3.2.9 and 3.3.9 are released. You can use them on Heroku.

It appears there's a packaging issue with 3.2.9 that cause net-imap to not install as a bundled gem. I'm guessing you can work around that by adding it to your Gemfile.

Ruby 3.3.9 Released

I've shared on here (many times) before, how Black communities making the intelligent and well informed decision to not trust the police, makes solving homicides almost impossible.

Because without the community's help, you can't catch murderers, and murderers are the ones doing all the murdering.🤷🏿‍♂️

You can make the murder rate go down, just by showing Black communities that cops are not here to prey on them and extract wealth from them.

You can make the murder rate go up, just by reminding Black communities that no, cops are absolutely here to prey on them and extract wealth from them.

🙂🙃

You all know full well that there is no world in which Taylor Swift's house is broken into by home invaders while she's performing at the Grammys, and Travis Kelce empties a clip at them, and the cops bring drug dogs to the house to find Taylor's edibles and send her to jail.

After emptying his clip, Travis Kelce would have no concern dialing 911. He would fully expect the police to show up and be helpful.

He wouldn't even remove a bong from a coffee table before opening the door🤷🏿‍♂️

Because the experience that white folk and Black folk can expect from cops is different

Let's talk ICE.

ICE is now arresting women that seek help at shelters. This discourages women from seeking help.

ICE arrests women at hospital emergency rooms. This discourages injured women from getting life saving care.

ICE is using local cops to make arrests. This discourages calling 911.

If you've understood this thread so far, you will see that the rate of calls to 911 from undocumented people is going to go down.

Then the murder rate amongst undocumented people, is going to go up.

By their actions, cops have *increased* the murder rate amongst a population.🤦🏿‍♂️

"Why Black people don't call the police."

And

"Why cops make the murder rate go up."

Part 1000.

Award winning musician GloRilla's house was burglarized by home invaders who knew she would be performing at a concert.

Police showed up and... searched her house for drugs...🤔

And charged her.🤡

The burglars knew that she wouldn't be home because her public performance schedule was well known. But they weren't expecting one of her relatives to be home, and heavily armed.😬 That relative wasn't going for the home invasion. He bucked back.

The would-be home invaders ran off. No one was shot.

The cops showed up and immediately started doing what cops do: not preventing any crimes, not solving any burglaries or home invasions, not investigating, but doing what they do best: putting drug charges on Black people.🤷🏿‍♂️

They searched her closet with drug dogs and found a stash of weed.

I just found Bret Victor's response to the question, "what is RealTalk's relationship to AI" and I did not think I could admire this man more but here I am doing just that.

@mhoye That’s what I’ve been striving for with Mastro as well. I wonder though whether people need to read the source code for that promise to really hold.
