If you’re tired of feeling like there’s nothing that you can do to help make the world a better place besides voting, I’m here to tell you that there is…

Volunteer.

Food banks, soup kitchens, senior centers, blood banks, animal shelters, and more. Find a place where you can be in the service of others. Where you can give back to the community that you live in.

It’s a great way to get out of your own head. Serve others, and serve the better parts of yourself in return

This isn't your normal "looking for work" post.

I've decided to shut my business and do more volunteer / community work.

If you know of an organisation which could use a board member with strong digital skills, extensive experience in open source and open standards, or cybersecurity please let me know.

Nothing full time. Personal recommendations preferred. Feel free to share.

My son's potential work placement fell through so I'm hoping the fediverse can step up and help me out.

My 16yo son is looking for a work placement in an engineering company. Mechanical engineering would be preferable as he is planning on studying that in uni. He's a smart and dependable first year college student studying math, physics and electronics. He's predicted to get triple As, is very academic but also likes the practical side of things.

He's looking for a work placement from 8-10 July (3 days total) in the UK. We live in Hampshire but he's willing to commute for a meaningful work placement. I'm even willing to book a hotel room for a good work placement anywhere else in the UK.

Please boost for wide reach. Thank you!

Edited to clarify it's only for 3 days.

Jumped down towards the end - possibly with some lucky guesses!

🚀 I've just opened 2 new roles in my department at the Open Home Foundation to work full-time on #HomeAssistant!

🖥️ Frontend Engineer
🔐 Security Engineer

Fully remote. Full-time. #OpenSource every day.

Best job in the world. Working on open source for a non-profit, building the biggest smart home platform on the planet. It changed my life; your chance to change yours.

Boosts appreciated! 🙏

In fact, I am willing to offer up to five hours of my time — free — to any public sector team or nonprofit (with annual operating costs below USD 2M) anywhere in the world that needs help figuring out what makes sense and how to respond to top down pressure telling you to implement AI.

And if they’ve already chosen something for you, I am willing to help you figure out how to sand down the risks.

Edit: for public servants who technically can’t get ‘free’ things from a vendor, consider this one on one coaching / advice or a pre-sales call

What if I could convince you that taking the same time to explain detailed requirements and carefully validate results with a junior colleague instead of a chatbot would not only give you two people who understood the code instead of zero, but if you do it a few times in a row you eventually get a senior colleague out of the deal for free.
@sammachin did I miss you at the #homeassistant meetup at De Hems this evening? I met another guy from Bristol called Chris and caught a few minutes of @Edent and @andypiper
