“At the same time, few actors along the chain and few investors accumulate huge profits out of small-scale producers, unhealthy diets and speculation.
The Right to Food initiative seeks to address these urgent issues by demanding that the EU finally adopts policies that ensure the transition to agroecological food systems where everyone has access to sufficient, safe, sustainable, fair and nutritious food.”

6/7 Last but not least, the capitalist food system is actively destroying the environment with unsustainable farming practices and shipping food around the world using fossil fuels instead of focusing on local production.

“In Europe, millions of people struggle with food insecurity. Many more cannot afford a healthy and adequate diet. Moreover, farmers and food workers cannot make a living, and sustainability is often compromised because of lack of political will and resources.”

5/7 There are a couple of reasons why we need an alternative to the current capitalist system, aside from the fact that it’s not doing it’s most basic job of matching supply and demand. It is also providing for neither food producers nor the people as a whole, since small farmers are going bankrupt while local food is out of reach to consumers.

4/7 This is “about a refusal to go by the narrative that security equals militarisation, and instead encourages us to put our focus on peace building practices as food system change.”

3/7 “This is not a petition. It is a legal instrument. If we reach one million signatures across at least seven EU countries, the European Commission must respond and open a formal process. That is the door. But we have to push it open.

The right to food will not appear in European law because it is morally correct. It will appear because enough people demand it, formally, through the European Citizens’ Initiative.”

2/7 The access to adequate, safe, sustainable and nutritious food is a fundamental human right. However, it is not yet the case in the European Union. The ECI on the Right to Food aims to change this and make this right a reality for everyone in the EU. By supporting our initiative, you are taking a stand against food insecurity and unfair food systems, and advocating for a just and sustainable food system for Europe.

4/5 What is OmaStadi?

OmaStadi is Helsinki's participatory budgeting process. Through OmaStadi, you can propose how the city should spend 10 million euros. Proposals were collected in autumn 2025, after which the City has evaluated the proposals and prepared cost estimates. The city will implement the proposals that receive the most votes.
