A Mother’s Day that ignores this brutal reality misses the point. True solidarity means fighting for the rights of ALL mothers.
What does it mean to be a mother on the move? To fight not only for your own life but also for that of your children? When we draw attention to mothers’ rights, needs, work and care work on Mother’s Day, we must not forget mothers who have become refugees above all. Studies show that they face an increased risk of depression, anxiety, PTSD, and suicidal thoughts.
“Tag der Befreiung” ist übrigens keine unproblematische Bezeichnung. Die Bildungsstätte Anne Frank schreibt dazu: “Der Großteil der Deutschen fühlte sich 1945 nicht vom Nationalsozialismus befreit – sie hatten ihn entweder unterstützt, von ihm profitiert oder ihn zumindest durch Untätigkeit geduldet. Sie waren besiegt, vielleicht beschämt, aber wohl kaum befreit. Indem vom „Tag der Befreiung“ gesprochen wird, rechnet man die Mehrheit der Deutschen zu Unrecht den Opfern zu.”
Heute ist der sogenannte “Tag der Befreiung”. Wir wollen an diesem Tag zurückzuschauen und den Opfern des Nationalsozialismus gedenken. Aber wir wollen auch auf die Gegenwart schauen: Mitte letzten Monats lag die AfD in Wahlumfragen erstmals bundesweit ganz vorne, gleichzeitig ist die Anzahl rechts motivierter Gewalttaten auf dem höchsten Stand seit 2016.
