Wistman's Woods, on Dartmoor, Devon, are allegedly haunted by hellhounds. 'Wistman' is a dialect word for the Devil, with 'wist' meaning 'eerie' or 'uncanny'. The woods and their legends are said to have inspired the Sherlock Holmes mystery 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'.
