Last night I went to a 70th birthday party and ended up sitting next to Frank.

Frank used to work as a computer programmer, because this was the 1970s to 90s and people had normal job titles that described real things, instead of "full stack orchestration engineer" or "solutions architect".

Anyway Frank's employer was the Victorian Attorney General's department. He wrote, updated and maintained in-house software for managing the court system, trial documentation managements and so on using low level languages.

The point of this post is that there was nothing special about this period of history that made it possible for government departments to write and maintain their own software to solve their own problems then but not now.

The complete lack of any in-house capacity to do this kind of thing is a political choice. Frank is a reminder of that.

The video of my talk at last year's MeetingC++ is now on Youtube:

@Cookiemonster I couldn't make the netinst boot, but I managed to install from the Live image by having a terminal beside the regular setup, un/remounting some partitions and running grub-install manually.

I thought, these kinds of installs were a thing of the past, but I guess that's what I get for not going mainstream 🤷

Does anyone know whether #Devuan is still actively maintained? I am trying to install a fresh system (Thinkpad T14s, 2.5 years old) and all the different install methods and media have different issues that prevent a clean install 🙄

@rysiek Haha, lol, no. I really wanted to like the KDE PIM stack, but I gave up years ago.

The last time I tried, the crash manager would itself crash when called, resulting in "DrKonqi crash spam". Had to mark the respective binary -x to prevent 💩

Der Begriff "Open Source" kommt #Merz in seiner Rede zu digitaler #Souveränität auf dem #Digitalgipfel nicht über die Lippen, wohl aber "Bundeswehr".
@rysiek I have had the "+" to " plus " conversion on several airlines. I think it's some common backend that they are using that does this.

A sample collected by NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover from an ancient dry riverbed in Jezero Crater could preserve evidence of ancient microbial life. Taken from a rock named “Cheyava Falls” last year, the sample, called “Sapphire Canyon,” contains potential biosignatures, according to a paper published Wednesday in the journal Nature.
