If I could change one thing about the way we talk about copyright, it would be to replace "protected" with "encumbered," at least in the library context. An out-of-print book from 1950 with a dead author and a defunct publisher is not "protected" by copyright; it's encumbered. 60-year-old newspaper articles, 10-year-old political ads, on and on - vast swaths of in-copyright material with no commercial life but some remaining intellectual value aren't protected by copyright. They're encumbered.

If you do one good Nerd Thing this week, make it tapping the 'I Don't Need a Refund' button in Tweetbot and Twitterrific.

These apps, in many ways, pioneered the modern concept of quality, indie app for iPhone. They gave us much more than they ever asked for with their subscriptions.

Join me in not needing a refund: https://www.macstories.net/stories/a-final-update-to-tweetbot-and-twitterrific-that-allows-users-to-support-tapbots-and-the-iconfactory/

A Final Update to Tweetbot and Twitterrific That Allows Users to Support Tapbots and The Iconfactory

Usually, when a big company shuts down an API, they give customers time to prepare. It’s the right thing to do regardless of what any terms of service say. That’s not how things went down with Twitter. Instead, as I wrote in January, Twitter eliminated access to its API for many third-party apps, including Tweetbot

Call me a cynic, but I have a difficult time believing that.
Looking for Washington DC locale recommendations. I’m visiting April. Doing all the tourist stuff. Not sure what section to to homebase in #WashingtonDC #Travel

Allow myself to introduce ... myself... I'm the Entry Descent and Landing Lead for the Mars Sample Return Lander at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Have launched several things off the planet: some to Mars, some to the #iss and a few into the Pacific (on purpose). Look forward to discussing #MSR and other random subjects with the #Fediverse

I may work on missions to the red planet, but I bleed midnight green #FlyEaglesFly 🦅

When I first moved to #RVA a couple years ago, there was a Twitter bot that scraped data from the Richmond Emergency Services live feed and tweeted it. It was super helpful in many ways, in part because it was a record of the feed. (I.e., the live feed doesn’t maintain a history.) So, for example, in the morning I could look up what the police were doing at my neighbors house the previous night. Are there any #RVA users on here who know how to do this and would be willing to set it up on this site? I have no idea how to do stuff like this myself. I believe other #Virginia cities and counties use the same system, so we could start to replicate this across the state.
