My laptop died yesterday.. there was no way but a clean slate start.. kinda hard to breathe now.
For a start, I installed Steam.
Lovely to be invited by Roos Ettema for a @vuamsterdam podcast to talk about the 2x award-winning SLABx3D teaching innovation and much more. You can now listen to my interview with Sem Barendse on Spotify (in Dutch)!

Fortunately, I landed on the job I am really excited for. (6/6)
I am still in academia, but in a different role. I am looking forward to seeing what would be like in my future.
Starting something new is scary. But, I gotta out of that frozen status. And it was helpful for me to break down the steps and think. Hope it helpful for someone else too.
Then, I started thinking what I actually like. (5/n)
In my case, I like statistics and genetics. I did not change a bit since my BSc days!
And it opens up a lot more options, and more importantly gives me the names - Data analyst, bioinformatician, statistician, technician. And there are vacant positions in industry, research institutes and universities.
First, I set aside the idea *if* I can do certain tasks. Gingerly and absolutely. (4/6)
When you think of an experiment, it is essential to assess if it is feasible. I was not conformable getting rid of the idea if I am eligible and capable for certain jobs.
Here is how I convinced myself - I know my brain is obsessive enough to get a PhD (in abroad!), learn how to code and so on. I can learn new skills.
I can assure you that there are alternative ways out there, but no one actually can help finding it. (3/6)
My university is very supportive that I got to talk with a career adviser. She was so encouraging and reassuring that I will find a new job, even though my only proud skill is dissecting snails faster than anyone else. She told me how to use Linkedin and prepare myself for a job interview. But what kind job I like to apply for is all on me.
When I started thinking about my next step, I felt like there is absolutely nothing out there (2/6).
Because becoming a PI is hard, I needed to focus on that. Getting a PhD, getting some grants and postdoc positions, making own research profile, learning how to run a meeting and teaching. Plus, moving internationally, learning new languages and cultures. That is a bit too much to prepare a Plan B, just in case.
