I live in the UK and Portugal, near the sea in both places. I am learning Portuguese at the moment and it's very tricky but good fun. I used to work in the university sector but I'm now retired which is a great relief. I completed a doctorate in 2018 using Actor-Network Theory AKA ANT to help describe an organisation during a state of change. I enjoy reading very long modern literary books, anything around 1000 pages works for me, but I also like science fiction and good detective novels.
@greenpeace isn’t resistance futile now? Nothing is working to stop oil production. The USA and Saudi Arabia are pumping more than ever. Posting on social media is pointless and what are individuals supposed to do about it? Just passing on a post is a complete waste of time. None of the environmental organisations have a real strategy to resist what’s happening. Making people with no power feel guilty about their powerlessness is just annoying.

The UK government keeps claiming that the UK has the highest growth in the G7. This is not true. The UK had fast growth between 2021 and 2022 at 4% but since then the growth rate has been one of the slowest and lowest in the G7 and is expected to be around 1% during 2025. This is a lot lower than the USA.

You cannot believe anything the #Tories say.

TUC: UK suffered the highest inflation and lowest growth in the G7 in the last two years

New TUC analysis showing that the UK suffered the highest inflation and lowest economic growth of any G7 country since the end of 2021 (when interest rates began to be raised).

@Susan_Larson_TN unfortunately it seems that there are many people who are looking forward to your list of hashtags.

Lest we forget (again)...

A new U.N. report detailed “horrific violations and abuses” in the Sudan war as fighting spread to more areas of the country. Both the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary have committed indiscriminate attacks on civilians, including mass rape. However, the war in Sudan has been overshadowed by the conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, meaning desperate pleas for aid have largely gone unanswered.

It looks like the UK governments Rwanda deportation plan might be about to fall apart…

The UN Security Council today sanctioned senior leaders of six armed groups operating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including the resurgent M23 militia, as violence spirals in the region. DRC’s government, the US, the UN and others accuse neighboring Rwanda of supporting the M23, which is threatening to capture the east’s biggest city. Rwanda denies any involvement.

@ArachnidPress I’ve added it to my To-Read list.
I’ve just joined #bluesky as they’ve opened it to anyone and everyone and to see what it’s like. It’s like X, Threads, Mastodon, Instagram, etc. I’m wondering, what’s the point of yet another (anti)social network? I’m assuming they are playing on the X will die soon rif but that looks unlikely.
My best friend has…a brain tumour, lung cancer, kidney cancer, adrenal cancer, lymphatic cancer and oesophageal cancer. I’ve noticed that the Prime Minister has not yet been in contact with him.
Can someone remind me what his job is?
@jda Don't bother with Poor Things then. You'll be asleep for the last 40 minutes or so...
