what to do if there's a witch at your door

If we call all Norse people from the Viking Age "Vikings", it's only fair to also call all British people from the Age of Sail "Pirates".

"William Shakespeare was inarguably the most famous Pirate playwright."

"Most Pirates at the time were at least nominally loyal to Pirate Queen Elizabeth."

"Under James, the noted witch-hunting enthusiast, the Pirate homeland had finally been united under a single king."

"Most Pirates practiced a religion called 'Anglicism' that differed from that of pre-piratical Britain. But in the far north some adhered to the cult of 'Presbyterianism' and yet others clung to the ancient Catholicism of their heathen forebearers."

"The Pirates once again captured Napoleon Bonaparte, and left him stranded on the remote island of Saint Helena."

"I am descended from Scottish Pirates. Which sounds a lot cooler than saying my ancestors were probably farmers from Fife and sheep thieves from the borders."

I was reading someone talk about the difference between an academic ML conference and a hypey industry AI conference and they said ‘it’s like the difference between chemistry and alchemy. Or between astronomy and astrology.’

I really like that

The Government of Canada is taking a survey about "defining the next chapter of Canada’s AI leadership”.

These were my answers. I’m sure they’re career-limiting, and who knows if they’ll change any outcome of anything, but sufficiently advanced spite is indistinguishable from imagining Sisyphus happy.

Help define the next chapter of Canada's AI leadership

Current status: Open from October 1 to October 31, 2025 Canada helped invent modern AI. To stay a leader—and protect our digital sovereignty—we're running a 30-day national sprint to shape a renewed AI strategy. We're inviting founders, researchers, workers, creators, students, public servants, and community voices to weigh in.

Because there may be a few #vintage computer nerds here 😄, here's a story of how #BBC #Wales handled the decision, for the 40th anniversary of #Eastenders earlier this year, to show the BBC1 globe ident as broadcast in 1985.

Instead of simply using a recording of the ident (which was only on screen for a few seconds) as other regions did, they instead managed to dust off & use the original signal generation hardware that had been sitting in a basement corner!

I didn't fight in two world wars for this
@christianschwaegerl @cwebber Someone said “hypocrisy is the far-right’s virtue signalling” - it makes more sense, thinking about it this way…
I'm honestly getting really tired of being lectured about how 'health' works by utterly clueless narcissistic old men who all look like they drank from the wrong grail
