Several book series were seminal in my development as a youth: Dune, LOTR, Elric of Melnibone, Recluse, and Enders Game among them. I ran across this and I think it succinctly summarizes the key points I learned from Ender...so I thought I would share.

Got this from 1440 (https://join1440.com/) and thought it was interesting, especially the part about the CIA being a funding source...

Biotechnology startup Colossal announced plans (https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-a/) yesterday to develop an organism gene-edited to match the extinct dodo bird, the company's third so-called "de-extinction" project after the woolly mammoth and Tasmanian tiger (see 101 https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-f/). The Texas-based group revealed it had raised $150M in its latest funding round at an estimated $1B valuation.

The last sighting of a dodo, a tall, flightless bird (https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-z/) native to the island of Mauritius off the coast of Madagascar, was recorded in the late 17th century, less than one hundred years after Europeans arrived.

The procedure will likely involve the insertion of a bird egg cell modified as a dodo cell (https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-v/) into an existing egg, with the fertilized egg expected to mature and harbor dodo-like reproductive cells.

The novel procedure has attracted investment (https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-e/) from the venture capital arm of the US Central Intelligence Agency, In-Q-Tel, a firm looking to fund cutting-edge technology it believes could be useful for intelligence gathering. See the projects In-Q-Tel supports here (https://news.join1440.com/t/j-l-emtidl-dydldrjtjk-s/).

I work in the SLTT (State, Local,
Tribal, & Territorial) government space. We have been discussing quantum computing and it's impact on current methods of cryptography and I thought...let's ask the peeps in the fediverse for input and comment. I am wondering if you are already looking at how this will impact you and or your organization(s) and what you may be doing to prepare and/or contribute to the preparations.

Interesting that PayPal would say they were not compromised and that the attackers used credentials gleaned from other sources...implying that the user was at fault for password recycling and not using MFA. Guess what...I am a PayPal user. I have a debit card connected to PayPal. That card is connected ONLY to PayPal and goes to an empty account used for...NOTHING. I NEVER reuse passwords and my PayPal account is secured with MFA. And??? My card was fraudulently used in mid December. Interesting no? I lost nothing because I had nothing in that account, on purpose, and have since replaced the card and locked it just for an extra safety measure. BUT, IMHO it clearly suggests that PayPal is incorrect as to the nature of the attack.

And...I also posted this on Reddit under r/paypal.

The bot replied, "Posts about PayPal's policies will be removed. No more complaining about PayPal policy and their taking funds from your account for violations of rules. If you don't like the rules don't use PayPal. If you don't want to lose money, don't leave funds in your PayPal account. Simple as that. But these posts are often political or misleading. So no more posts on this subject!"

Please note the specific text, "If you don't want to lose money, don't leave funds in your PayPal account. Simple as that."
