Those who love the poinsettia consider it the botanical equivalent of a prominent soprano in the grand opera that is Christmas. For this showy native of Mexico, known to the Aztecs as cuetlaxochitl (pronounced ket-la-sho-she) takes the season’s theme tune at least two octaves above the middle C. As someone who enjoys turn-of-the-20th-century weird fiction, I am steeled to a certain amount of objectionable content. But I picked up Algernon Blackwood's "The Wendigo" for the first time, this week. And wow. I was not prepared for how ugly and overt the racism is in that story.

The real horror is the idea of revisiting Blackwood's "The Willows" and seeing what ugliness I've forgotten about. I might choose to enjoy my memory of it, instead.
