We are 4 days from Rubin First Look, so we're locked in on our 4 science goals!

NSFF–DOE Rubin Observatory will focus on:

🧐 Understanding Dark Matter and Dark Energy
🌎 Creating an Inventory of the Solar System
🌌 Mapping the Milky Way
☄️ Exploring the Changing Sky

As we begin to #CaptureTheCosmos, we hope to answer questions like what are dark matter and dark energy? How did our Solar System form and evolve? How did the Milky Way form, and how has it evolved?

We'll even have answers to questions we didn't think to ask! 🧐

Get ready to join us virtually for #RubinFirstLook — the grand reveal of images from Rubin, and the first preview of what's to come over the next ten years as Rubin begins to #CaptureTheCosmos

🗓️: June 23, 2025
🕚: 11am US EDT

We're just 6 days away from revealing NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory's first images!

And since we're counting down to #RubinFirstLook, here are some numbers to know 🔭 🔢

⌛️ 29 years from conception to completion
💪 ~1,400 people contributing to Rubin construction
🌏 ~3,000 scientists among 8 science collaborations
🌌 ~20 terabytes of cosmic data collected every night during Rubin's 10-year LSST

🚨THIS IS NOT A DRILL🚨We are 6 days away from the world's First Look at images from Rubin!

NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory will take a new 3200-megapixel image every ~40s, yielding ~20 terabytes of data every night! The deluge of data is about to begin 🌊

Each image will cover an area the size of 45 full moons! Every 3–4 nights, Rubin will cover the entire southern hemisphere sky.

Each picture will wavelengths from near ultraviolet to near-infrared, and will generate trillions of measurements of billions of objects.

First Look is just the beginning! Join us on June 23 for the first preview of what's to come in the next ten years with Rubin 🤩

We are T-7 days from the reveal of NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory's first images!

This reveal, which we call "First Look," is the next step towards being ready to start making your new favorite decade-long movie 🎥

Over 10 years, Rubin's Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) will create the most detailed time-lapse view of the cosmos ever 🤯

Each night, Rubin will scan the sky, capturing images with the LSST Camera, the largest digital camera ever built.

Much greater than the sum of our parts!

NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory is what happens when the world comes together to make something incredible.

#RubinFirstLook on June 23 isn't just about Rubin's first images, it's also about who made those images possible!

🧵

💲 Funded and led by:
U.S. National Science Foundation + U.S. Department of Energy, Office of Science

💪Early support from the Charles Simonyi Fund for Arts and Sciences via LSST Discovery Alliance

🔭 Operated by:
NSF NOIRLab (AURA) + SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (Stanford)

With major support from:
🇫🇷 CNRS/IN2P3 (France) + 🇬🇧 STFC/LSST:UK (United Kingdom)
🇧🇷 FAPESP and MCTI in Brazil, long haul data network

And many around the world who contributed to construction🔨

×

1) NSF–DOE Rubin Observatory will revolutionize the way we explore the cosmos. Rubin will conduct a 10-year survey called the Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) that will create an ultra-wide, ultra-high-definition, time-lapse record of our Universe. 🎥

2) Rubin is packed with innovative technology in its telescope design, camera, and data management system.🔭

3) Rubin will bring the night sky to life, yielding a treasure trove of discoveries: asteroids and comets, pulsating stars, and supernova explosions.☄️

4) Rubin is a powerful new tool to answer a wide range of science questions about dark matter, dark energy, the Milky Way, the formation of our Solar System, black holes, exploding stars, and much more.🌌

5) Rubin will reveal questions we don’t yet know to ask.🤯

6) People and organizations all around the world make Rubin possible with the common goal of advancing our understanding of the Universe.🌎🌍🌏
