Something in @pluralistic’s @defcon talk has been sitting with me all day. To summarise badly:
Tech workers were looked after when it was a scarce skill. The layoffs make it clear it isn’t as scarce anymore.
As the saying goes - the future is here just not evenly distributed.
Abused amazon delivery/warehouse workers are the tech worker future.
The only defense is to unionise.
Update: A recording of the talk is now out https://defcon.social/@defcon/113149836781294738
Please enjoy @[email protected] Cory Doctorow's fantastic presentation on taking back the internet from last month at #DEFCON32. Cory's takes are always thoughtful, provocative and it was his deshittification concept that helped inspire the DC32 theme. More videos from #defcon coming soon. As always, pass it on. https://youtu.be/4EmstuO0Em8
All public transit should be free.
All education should be free.
Access to the internet should be free.
And you know what? Water and food should be free too. As should housing.
edit: And how could I forget about healthcare. That should be free, too.
Even if CO₂ emissions decreased annually as much as during the pandemic lockdown, we wouldn't achieve our climate targets.
While individuals made huge sacrifices, the system remained. This shows that individual action will not solve climate change. We need the system to change.
