A truffle hunting team is only as strong as the bond between human and hound. A trusting, loving relationship can make all the difference in a successful search for these delicious fungi!

Watching people and their dogs grow closer while exploring the art of truffle hunting brings me immense joy. It is one of my favorite journeys to witness - seeing how relationships change, strengthen, and deepen with each step taken together!

Truffles have an aroma truly like no other—one crafted and perfected by Nature. Their enchanting scent serves as a beacon, luring animals close enough so they can be discovered and devoured - dispersing the spores to form new truffles!

Did you know that a dog's nostrils are two separate openings? This allows them to control the amount of air they take in and helps them distinguish smells better. Plus, the shape of the nostrils helps them determine the direction of a smell too! Amazing, right? 🐶😊

I am honored to work alongside my dogs and I love sharing this activity with others! It's more than a scent game. The communication and connection is unique to each team and can't be standardized to a one size fits all process. Here is my answer to a recent question.

ASK THE PRO:
Q: Why don't you teach group classes?
A: Because truffle hunting is not a group activity and learning in context allows for faster understanding while eliminating irrelevant variables.

In the Pacific Northwest, truffles favor the Douglas Fir stands so it helps to know how to identify these trees.

Douglas fir trees have flat needles, the same color on both sides, soft to the touch, and fragrant. The bark is a reddish brown color accented by ridges running vertically up the trunk. The bark on young Douglas Fir trees looks similar to Subalpine fir, but as the tree matures, the bark shows its telltale ridges.
